If they say he didn't decay for six days, it's likely they didn't bury him until after he began to decay. So he was likely very dead when he was buried. But he probably did die of some combination of illness, starvation and dehydration. Still not a fun sounding way to go..

He was in a coma. Possibly due to an illness like encephalitis.
