At the time when the Irish Crown Jewels were created, the monarch of Britain also claimed to be the monarch of Ireland, although most Irish people did not accept this and to the extent that an 'Irish royalty' existed you would need to go back to the ancient line of Irish 'High Kings' and their modern descendants The jewels that were stolen were actually in the possession of the Order of St Patrick - the order of knighthood created to be the Irish equivalent of the English/British Order of the Garter. They did, in theory, belong to to the British monarch and would have been worn by them when knighting a new member of the Order but would generally have been worn by the Order's Grand Master for ceremonial display. Their disappearance is a fascinating and often highly amusing tale that is worth reading more about if you like quirky tales from history.

Who put Bella in the Wytch Elm. After a few years the graffiti stopped, this would have been the late 1950s. After that it was eventually largely forgotten. Until the late 1990s, when the graffiti started again, in what appeared to be the same hand as the original. The local theory is that the culprit, now in old-age and likely dying, wanted to remind everyone of what he had done, knowing he had successfully got away with it for his whole life. Very creepy story that one.
