Project Ara had me hooked for the future of the mobile phone tech but alas it never came to life

Google canceled project ara because that would eliminate the yearly expectation among customers of new device with new features. Hence less sales and less profit. It all about the money. 🤑

Actually Project Ara was Motorolas idea.
Google just bought it from them and developed it further to a point where it was actually functional (they had real working prototypes)

Why did they kill it?
Because they realized it wouldn't be profitable to make a smartphone that everyone could just upgrade instead of throwing it away when new hardware comes out.
So they introduced their overpriced Pixel Smartphone with a really bad repairability score and without an upgrade possiblities.

Why then does Motorola not continue developing their own modular smartphone design?
Because Google bought the rights from them so they aren't allowed to do that.
I think the Moto Mods are the only things they can produce without legal issues.


Project Ara would have been a huge step in the direction to save a ton of resources and reduce electronic waste by a lot but Google doesn't care.

Because Google has the rights for this we will NEVER see a modular smartphone like Project Ara.

I remember when the idea of modular phones were introduced and I that it would be the next big thing but as it turns out, foldable, foldable displays, foldable phones are now the future. I really hope we get to see a modular device one day

I was so happy when Google bought and redesigned Ara. I remember an old video that first had the concept. It's so upsetting that it's dead.

Yes, that's the Project Ara Concept. It would be a good idea to implement it to the Pixel Line Up.

You didn't mention main feature of airpower, you can place device anywhere on the pad because it had over 20 coils in development unit, compared to 2 to 3 coils in other chargers on which you must align the phone.
