The partial lunar eclipse lit up the night sky early Friday at 4:03 a.m. ET! If you missed it, here's a timelapse. The full moon Friday is known as the Beaver moon or the Frosty moon. It is named for beavers actively preparing for the winter.

A partial lunar eclipse is when the Earth moves between the sun and moon, but doesn't form a straight line in space. A small part of the moon's surface is covered by the darkest, central part of the Earth's shadow, and the rest of the moon is covered by the outer part of the Earth's shadow. In order for this to happen, there must also be a full moon.
