I am not really sure why we use the variable in this case. On LeftArrow the Custom Event 'BoxMoveLeft' is called and executed, I don't see where the variable plays a role in the chain.

you doing it a little bit wrong. On "Custom Event Trigger Arguments", it shoukld be "this". And on "Custom Event Arguments" you should look for the object that throws the event.
