“There’s no way you guys are eating this on the regular” I would presume anyone who is regularly eating funeral food leads a life of great tragedy so I hope not

You nailed it. Comforting. That's the whole point. Funerals make you feel hollow, so you get a hug from the inside.

Makes sense, honestly. I'm guessing that the bereaved don't really have the energy to cook anything fancy and it looks simple enough. Grief takes an immense toll both on the mind and the body, and something so comforting would do great to soothe.

"Honestly one of the most comforting things I've eaten in a really long time"
Hence why we bring them to funerals 🤗 Nothing says "I'm here for you" like a plate of hot cheesey potato goodness 💕

Utah native here. We always made them with corn flakes on top. It's a great exercise in texture. Toothy, creamy, crunchy, and cheesy.

Me and my grandmother made those last week for a family friend's funeral.

as someone from utah, you put about 100x more effort into those than ANYONE who would make them here…

I grew up in Utah and funeral potatoes were at every event, full stop. Funerals? Obviously. Wedding receptions? Of course. Bakesale fundraiser for the library? You betcha!

Utahn here; funeral potatoes are awesome. A key factor is that everyone has their own spin on the recipe with different ways of cutting the potatoes, to adding white onions, adding sour cream, etc. But they’re great. If you’ve had crappy funeral potatoes before, have someone else make them. Oh! And Texas sheet cake brownies. I don’t know if that’s a Utah thing or if it originated from somewhere else but those things are amazing too 🤤

Utah native here; one time for a church activity we did a funeral potato pot luck and everyone voted for the best one. I’m talking paper plates heaped with nothing but 15 different kinds of potatoes. It was the greatest night of my childhood

Butter, cream, cheese, and potatoes? Whoever invented was truly thinking of the best way to comfort the grieving.

You didn't just make it you made it from scratch! I salute you, sir. I salute you. Those look better then the run-of-the-mill funeral potatoes.

I don’t even live anywhere near Utah, but I love funeral potatoes and never knew it was a Salt Lake City thing! You learn something new every day I guess

My darling and very loved grandfather passed away a few months ago. Got four giant casserole dishes of funeral potatoes from friends and neighbors to feed our 40+ strong grieving family. It's always difficult to lose a loved one, but genuinely funeral potatoes are so comforting, and always a reminder of how loved you are when people bring you food in trying times 🥹

I live in Utah and funeral potatoes are at every funeral I've ever been to. It's the most comforting food I can think of. Every grandma has their own recipe and there's generally a half dozen different versions. I can't imagine a funeral with out them.
