Ring Alarm 2nd Generation Review - 2020 Keypad, Contact Sensor, Motion Detector & Range Extender

Today, we are going to check out the new 2nd generation alarm devices from Ring in 2020. Not all the components got the refreshed look but Ring released the 2nd generation keypad which badly needs it because a lot of people doesn't like how it looked when it was released. There is also a newer version of their motion detector, contact sensors and their range extender.

The big difference is that Ring made them smaller and have different battery type for power. The motion detector uses 2 AA batteries and the contact sensor uses 2 CR2320 button cell batteries. The first generation was powered by CR123A batteries. The motion detector also has better motion detection as per Ring but the app settings looks exactly the same as the older model. The contact sensor also can be separated up to an inch and will still be reliable while the 1st gen sensors needs a max of 1/2 inch gap.

I have been using the Ring alarm system going on 2 years now and I haven't had any issues. I haven't even changed the batteries (CR 123s) on any of them and the battery level still show "green" in the app.

I will link down below my Ring Alarm videos starting from my initial review 2 years ago...

Your video showed door sensor installation no one else did. The angled sensor on your shed door really helped. Thank you.

I'm impressed by the "tamper" notification out in the shed. I didn't see anything like that with Simplisafe.

Thank you! I was looking around for a comprehensive review and how-to for my new 2nd Gen Ring system and this video had everything I needed, unlike the other 10 or so videos I looked at before. Looks like you have a new subscriber 😊

Ring has responded to 3 smoke alarms in my home very quickly, within seconds of them going off. Everytime was due to my wife or daughter burning up something in the kitchen. I've had no problems with the 1st gen alarm outside of 3 faulty contact sensors that I'm replacing with the second gen. I due wish that Ring comes out with a glass break sensor and a smarter keypad that is more intuitive and can do everything that the app does. I dont believe I should be limited to using my cell or tablet to monitor the status of sensors, set up devices, or which window was left open.

Great video. I'm glad to see Ring continue to develop new products for their alarm systems. I would love to see an option where you can change the "tone" of the Entry delay and exit delay. They sound the same and I can not figure out which is which. So I wait to see if I hear "House Armed" or the alarm go off. Yikes!

Just an FYI...I have a glass break sensor installed from my previous alarm system. I can confirm that it works using the Ring Retrofit Kit. I do have to have to power the old alarm system by leaving it plugged in and a backup battery...but it does work. By the way, leaving it old system plugged in allowed me to also install the Ring Keypad Converter Step Down to continuously provide power to the keypads.

We live in the wilderness of interior Alaska so our needs are fairly unique...I like the Ring system because I get an email as soon as a sensor is tripped...a motion sensor, a door or cabinet is opened, a water heater starts leaking, a entry way starts freezing, the smoke/CO2 detector is sensed, etc. No monthly service fee which would be useless in our case since emergency response is much slower than me getting an email and having the neighbor run over to check out the problem. I did order a different sensor on Amazon that emails me the room temperature so I can see if there is any problem starting during the cold Alaska winters. If someone breaks in a steals a $200 TV, no big deal, but if they break in and the pipes freeze, or our water heater leaks, or the freezer dies with prime Alaskan salmon...that's a big deal. Ring Alarm's base station has a battery backup that lasts for 24 hours if the power goes out...by then my neighbor will have our generator up and running

Looking like a Fisher Price Toy! LMAO, for some reason that has been a really big hang up for me. Glad to see they finally upgraded the keypad. Also, nice to know about the notification if a jammer is being used! That last second piece of info is appreciated!

As my windows and doors are solid oak with a dark stain I prefer brown plugs, wall plates, and light switches which doesn't clash with the surroundings as the standard white ones do. These are usually more difficult to come by, and Ring's security system which is available solely in a matte white finish, is no exception. If I were to carefully paint the contacts, magnets, and motion detector (excluding the motion sensor) brown would it have a detrimental effect on the system? Your video is fantastic ... very informative. Thank you!
