Once you add your Nest thermostat to the Google Home app, you can easily control it, even when you’re not at home: adjust the temperature, change settings, see your Energy History, and more.

Who would’ve thought a thermostat app could be so convoluted and horrible, worst UI of any app or software I’ve probably every seen

We just had a complete new HVAC system installed. The old a/c unit and electric furnace has outlived its usefulness. I purchased the new 2020 Nest and it works like a charm. I had no problem with the HVAC installer. My old system was a two wire system to the thermostat. He ran a new six wire system that also includes power to the thermostat. The Google Home app works great and I can even customize the Comfort, Eco, and Sleep setting to our personal needs. In the event if I loose WiFi connection the thermostat works in normal mode like my previous none WiFi thermostat. No issues and I'm pleased with how the Nest thermostat has worked this far.

Why does the thermostat not show up in my Nest App when I install this way? The nest app is a lot easier to configure schedules than in the Home app.

The Home/Away Assist function in the Google Nest App, the Presence Sensing function and the Homs/Away Automations in the Google Home App failed miserably to automatically switch in and out of ECO mode. I found no solutions in those functions.

I did find a solution in the Automations of the Google Home app.

First I turned off all the Home/Away Functions in the Nest app, all the Presence Sensing functions and Home/Away routines in the Home app.

Then in Automations in the Home App, I set up two new routines. These routines use precise location info just like a naviagtion app would and were set up to mimic what the Home/Away and Presense Sensing functions are supposed to do.

My Arrive Home routine is set at 150 meters from home to change my thermostat to Heat - Cool mode.

My Leave Home routine is set at 500 meters from home to change my thermostat to ECO mode.

I tested and it worked exactly like I have wanted Home/Away to work all along.

Still can't find temperature presets. This app is really not user friendly. Nest app was way easier.

You can only control the temperature and not the hot water

I have a Nest thermostat and truly hate it. I have followed the instructions 3 times, I want it set to 80 for a/c and it constantly goes to 70. It is not learning. I am going to have it removed and replaced.

Can you lock the temperature so that only you can change it?

Google and their dumb functionality. Temperature presets should be adjustable from the thermostat with the radial settings. Their should be a an option in the hamburger menu and/or another button right on that screen.

No mention of Nest's external temperature sensors. Also not fully rolled out to everyone.

The newest version, gen3 google learning thermostat, DOES NOT WORK with 'Google home' and as such doesn't work with 'Google assistant'.

If you scan the QR code, it gives an error message.
If you add the numbers manually it has no place to add the second set of 4 numbers and doesn't let you continue.

I looked everywhere on the internet and only found that this is an unsolvable error on the google servers themselves and can't be solved.

Result ... of all the smart thermostats out there that work with google home and assistant ... one of the few that doesn't is the one bloody made by google!!!

So ... you're stuck using only the Google Nest app.

And ... nope you can't command that app via google home ... it askes for a google nest account AND not the google account you used to make it ... thus you also don't have that and thus can't add the app!

The app is ok ... but not being able to use voice commands sucks quite a bit ... especially since on the box it is claimed to work!

The thermostat is not even an option on Google home even thought it connects to the nest
