‎ I show you how I use coarse sponge pads and intake sponges we sell to optimize filtration.

On the Aquarium Co-Op aquarium channel we focus on freshwater fish, tropical fish, aquatic plants and in general all freshwater aquariums. Our goal is to help take your pet fish and graduate you to an aquarium hobbyist. Aquarium fish in general we find are a great way to learn about ecosystems. Your fish aquarium will reconnect you with nature. If you'd like to take it to the next level, subscribe to aquariumcoop and check out our weekly videos.

As someone whos local fish store is an hour and a half away, I really appreciate the demonstration on the walmart filter. Thanks so much!

Sometimes when I'm showing filters to new hobbyists they're scared to mess with their filter by customizing it, while others think it's too much work or research and prefer to go with the "easier" cartridge and whatever else the filter comes with. Most new hobbyists have never heard of beneficial bacteria in aquariums, the nitrogen cycle, or knew that filters could be customized in the first place. I understand the desire for some to go by the book or the manufacturer's recommendations (even though a lot of the time they make no sense, i.e. replacing media every x months which can crash your newly cycled tank), but I also think the fear of doing something wrong stems from lack of education on how filters work, why they're a good thing to have in your tank, what should and should not go in them, etc. Thanks for taking the time to teach us something new with these videos!

Just wanted to say THANKS!! I would like to say I am new ti fish keeping, but that would be a lie, I have kept fish twice before in my youth and failed terribly. Now I would say I am new to fish keeping correctly, and your videos have been critical in helping me do that. Thank You!!!

I am so glad you posted this video! I have a Topfin 10 gallon aquarium and can't keep up with the bio load of my fish. I'm having to replace the the disposable filters every two weeks instead of once a month. I'm going to get the sponge pads and pre-filter sponge, you've convinced me that those would be so much better and a lot less stress, lol

I just made my first “hot rod” filter! So excited to try different set ups like the ones you’ve shown here. I never knew there was more than just expensive cartridges. Thanks Cory!

Nice work! It has a very “unbox therapy” feel to it. Production quality is getting top notch guys

Love this!I was convinced at the beginning of my fishtank life that cannisters were the only way to truly get suitable water. Love all the information!

I use a bit of elastic to keep my sponge filter on my intake. (thin pony tail elastic, or thin elastic by the yard, cut and tied to fit adequately, and still remove and install the prefilter easily enough. LOVE the sponge intake filter! Easy to clean (easy to see that it NEEDS cleaned) and keeps a ton of gunk out of my filtration system. Thanks for teaching us this stuff Cory!!!

Great tips. Got into the hobby about a year ago and it took me months to figure this out. Kept wondering why when I changed my cartridges, a day would go by and the water would get cloudy.

One thing I would also suggest is to go to Walmart and get some basic polyfill. Put that in front of your coarse sponge as a prefilter. It's cheap and you can toss it out next water change, this way your coarse sponge doesn't get too gunky, and just a quick rinse in tank water is enough to keep it going great.

Almost the same setup I run on my Aquaclear 50. Ditched the sponge and carbon, put a course sponge on the bottom, then 2" of cotton batting, and the media bag on top. Works great, the cotton batting really polishes the water clean. Every month clean the sponge and replace the cotton batting.

Just want to say this video was so helpful. I also bought all my products from aquarium co-op and they came so quickly and they were such high quality. I'm setting up a new betta tank and I know my fishies will be so happy with this filter. Thanks Cory for teaching me how to set it up!

I really appreciate the things you share with us Gold Fish is my Hobby and being on a fixed income was making it very difficult to continue and those filters in Walmart and the Petshops is getting more expensive and with your technique I can CONTINUE being in the Hobby so again THANKS and MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY!🐒

Nice video!
Been hotrodding filters for 25 years... could never go back to stock.
I like to remove stuff from the system as quickly and often as possible, so I use denser sponges.

I wish I'd known this way back when I had a hang on back filter and spent so much money on cartridges! Thank you for your excellent videos, Corey!

love using the re usable pads i use the coarse on the inside and then use a more fine one on the intake. kinda as a clean that 2 or 3 times and get them fine particles out. then clean the inside ones during the 4th cleaning of the intake. love how your getting this info out there so folks can save money and spend more on the fish, along with helping the environment by creating less waste since they are super re usable
