Like so many modern "teachers" & students of the humanities, Kelly stereotypes & grabs an aspect of Stoicism & of Existentialism, and treats it as if it's 100%. "Stoics wanted to rid themselves of caring..." "Existentialists cared...." Ridiculous. Yeah, Existentialists tended to care ...mostly about themselves. Stoics tried to NOT let their emotions cloud their judgement...which is not the same as saying they didn't care.

I think Sean Kelly got this wrong because it sounds like he assumes that caring and passion are the same. I really question that.

"The tranquility that comes when you stop caring what *they* say. Or think or do. But only for what *you* do." - Marcus Aurelius

It's very clear that stoics do care, but only for what they can control. Just look at the life of Aurelius--he took care of many things great and small. He was an exceptional caretaker of one of the largest empires known to man... and he did that by being an even better caretaker of his own mind.

Having control over emotions doesn't mean to not have emotions. Imo stoicism is about not blindly following the passion but rather use it as a tool in bigger picture.

I think the Stoics and Existentialist may have agreed when distinguishing the difference between ego-driven caring (passions, expectations, attachment) vs unconditional caring for the highest good of all involved.

The stoics do not "don't care", they just focus their attention more on the things under their control. They do care, as on of human's nature is the capability to live in society and seek the better to the whole. The point is that you do that being rational, with virtue and focusing in what you control.

Love seeing all the fellow stoics and/or deep thinkers that have a decent understanding of what stoicism truly is. It’s a wonderful philosophy. Changed my life.
Existentialism is a wonderful philosophy as well. Really teaches you about transcendence. I know many may cringe at this but I believe the 2 philosophies can work quite well together.
