It's so sad and funny. I always hated school when I was in school but once I got out of school I realized just how much I'm in love with learning, it's my favorite thing to do. The fact that I had to wait until I was done with school to realize I loved learning exposes how truly awful the American education system is.

This applies to not just the American education system, but that of the world in general.

I was constantly in trouble for challenging my teachers, thinking for yourself makes you a target. By today's standards I would be labelled with oppositional defiant disorder.

I learnt about this modelling years ago so I can understand the growing trends toward home schooling and alternative institutions.

I get enraged thinking of people putting kids on drugs just because they can't sit still for 8 hours a day.. WELL DUH! heck a kid isn't meant to sit down & shut up for 1 hour... its just sad. It is a broken system.

This is true we don’t have critical thinkers coming out of educational institutions!

As a child, I remember how robotic and cold school was compared to family life. Little did I know that my natural repulsion was totally warranted...

Mind. Blown. I remember talking about how much our school reminded me of a prison. I've always been a bit of a rebel but I always stated that I rebelled against undue authority. I'm fine with obeying just or reasonable rules but not obeying for the sake of being obedient. I always hated school but have always loved learning. This makes so much sense. Wow. The bells and the desk thing.. totally.

This man is so brilliant. We have never needed a voice like his more.

My 5 children are homeschooled. My oldest son, 15 at the time, went to his cousin's high school one afternoon after school and waked the halls. Afterwards he got into our car and simply stated "that is the ugliest and most depressing place I've ever been in. It feels like a prison." It is considered a very nice school in a well-to-do area. That didn't matter to him, all he could perceive was the overwhelming oppresive institutionality of it and he wanted no part of it.

I used to see 1st grade kids in their 1st day of school. All with twinkles in their eyes. 3 months later, the twinkle was gone.

I agree 100 percent the whole system everywhere is fucked and what's worse is we are all leaving it happen and we're not changing anything, love your way of thinking

Public schools work to systematically remove your child’s natural curiosity. Curiosity is a sign of intelligence. Schools don’t want kids being curious and asking questions—they want to meekly sit at their desk all day and learn to accept being indoctrinated. This is why most boys, around the ages of 7-10, end up hating school and acting out.

My niece told me they took away art class & exchanged it for programming. She's in elementary school.

That is only one of the many reasons we homeschool! It’s not natural to make kids sit in a room for hours on end making them ask for everything, similar to prisons!😢

Canadian here. I can remember teachers trying to rearrange desks into friendlier patterns, giving us some lessons away from the desk and having us get up and stretch periodically. I hope that's still happening.
