This perfectly demonstrates the disconnect engineering has from science. The Ancient Greek engineers fundamentally understood how this device worked, but they could have never provided you a formula to prove that it did. Science can come back now and explain why this happened and how to calculate it but the Ancient people didn't need to know that to put it in practice.

I think they got this really wrong in this video. The Greeks or Romans never connected these hydraulic telegraph vessels with pipes or tubes.
.The way this hydraulic semaphore system actually worked was with a fire signal.
The man operating the distant telegraph would raise a torch and the receiving operator would start draining their water out of their telegraph. The distant operator would lower his torch after a certain time and that's when the receiving operator would turn off his water flow. The floating rod with specific pre-recorded orders labeled on it would then drop to the proper command (If the timing was right) all of which would be indicated incrementally along the rod. The longer the torch was held up, the more water drained, lowering the rod, and when the distant signal was put out or lowered they stopped the water flow and read the command. It wasn't through connecting pipes.

I think this channels makers are confusing this with the British hydraulic telegraph, built 2, 000 years later, witch did operate on actual hydraulic pressure and connecting pipes to move the water level to a pre-written down order or signal on the other side of the "line".

Now imagine there was no pipe between them but each semaphore still reacted with changes between the other one. That's how Quantum messaging works.

I think he might have confused the Ancient Greek hydraulic semophore with the 19th century British Hydraulic Telegraph.

Reminds me of Turtledove's Southern Victory series where a point is made repeatedly that in the belly of a WWI era tank you could scream your lungs out 2 inches from a guy's ear and he would hear NONE OF IT. It's almost unsettling

This seems like something that would be used for binary (e.g. Morse) code, where up is on and down is off

The descrioption of the mechanism is wrong. Containers were not connected.
