How This Bookstore Is Thriving in the Age of Amazon

Even while we spend more of our days staring at screens and do more of our shopping on Amazon, book sales are actually rising at independent bookstores. Here's how Brooklyn shop 'Books Are Magic' is making it work.

It’s my dream to own my own book store and I hope that I can own one one day

I know of a small bookstore in Holland, Michigan that was around when I was a child in the 1960's and it is still thriving. The recession a few years ago closed a larger book store in a nearby mall, but it didn't touch the little store in downtown Holland, which is now doing better than the mall. It shows that people still like shopping for books in the middle of an old fashioned friendly small town!

The only books I buy at Amazon are the free e-books that they offer from time to time. Other than that, I love visiting my local used book stores. There are 6 of them within a 10-20 minute driving distance from where I live. And all the funding goes back to the libraries in the area.

I've found some great gems at them too. I got most of the Wheel of Time series in hardback 1st ed 1st print for 30 bucks.

How can they possibly be profitabl e? Commercial rent in NYC is insane and they sell a low margin, low turnover product. Yet they are "thriving, " whatever that might mean.
