Meteora translates to "suspended in the air" or "in the heavens above," perfectly capturing the essence of these stunning monasteries. Located in central Greece near the town of Kalambaka, the monasteries are perched atop enormous rock pillars that rise dramatically from the Thessalian plains. 🌄

The origins of the monasteries date back to the 14th century when monks sought refuge in the cliffside caves before establishing the monastic community on these isolated rock pinnacles. Initially, access to these monasteries was extremely difficult, requiring ladders or large nets to haul up both goods and people. Today, steps have been cut into the rock, making them more accessible to visitors. 🪜📜

Out of the twenty-four monasteries that were originally built during the height of the monastic community's development, only six remain today and are still active: Great Meteoron, Varlaam, Roussanou, St. Nicholas Anapausas, St. Stephen, and Holy Trinity.
