You can't see black holes, only their accretion disk. But, because of the black hole, weird optics happen to the light coming from the accretion disk.

But what’s crazy is that this is what it looks like from millions of lightyears away! If we ever see a good quality image of a black hole, what we see will be the black hole more than 100, 000 years ago.

Great stuff as always, but I would prefer if we say "why we think they look like this" since giving the impression to people that we are always sure about things in science turns back at us when we discover that the truth is something else or find a better explanation

I believe that depicting the accretion disk of the black hole with a bluish-white hue would add a greater sense of realism, as it closely resembles its appearance to the human eye.

How strong does gravity have to be to bend light? Saturn has a good amount of gravity, but not enough to distort the image.

They don't, our animations are based on our not yet complete understanding of singularities but it's never been imaged properly (data matching pixels in a simulation to your models also isn't a real image). Do you know what every single black hole looks like that we observe in our own galaxy? Nothing, empty space, dark holes would be a better term, and we have not once yet observed an acretion disk, we can only infer the existence of a black hole due to the gravitational effects it has on other bodies.

But isn't light supposed to entering the black hole from all directions, like 3d so that we see the black hole covered with light from all directions.
