There are no democracies. Republics are systems that are ruled by the public, that's why they're called Re-publics. But America also has a constitution that grants certain essential rights to the demos/people. It is a constitutional democracy.

Listening to politicians and news pundits, one will find that people on the left almost exclusively refer to the US as a democracy while people on the right will refer to it as a republic.

The two are not mutually exclusive. USA is both. "Constitutional" denotes the foundational law that both establishes and limits how the nation is governed. "Republic" denotes who is the ultimate authority, the "owner" of the state - republic meaning it is the citizenry. Democracy is HOW state decisions are made. It is actually almost impossible and therefore incredibly rare to be a republic that is NOT a democracy (although some are very limited democracies).

If we were a true democracy, the popular vote would always win. As a constitutional republic, we elect state leaders. Those leaders, choose electors who ultimately choose our president.
This is why local elections are more important than a national election.

He missed the MOST important part of the definition: Individual liberties are paramount. They take precedence over mob want and rule.

For example, the crap happening is not supposed to be happening. That is, FJB and crowd are not supposed to be able to vote the contents of my wallet into their. Nor are they supposed to be able to legislate my liberty rights away (e.g., gun laws).
