Let's just admit that nu metal open the door to the whole metal universe for thousands of kids and this is amazing.

Mid 90s were more raw late 90s early 2000s had more of a hip hop influence

1994-1996: Nu metal emerged from a variety of influences, including rap rock, funk metal, and alternative metal. Bands such as Rage Against the Machine, Faith No More, and Tool were early influences. Korn's self-titled debut album in 1994 is often cited as the first nu metal album, with its heavy guitar riffs, hip hop-inspired beats, and raw emotional lyrics.

1997-1999: Nu metal exploded in popularity, with a number of bands achieving mainstream success. Korn, Limp Bizkit, and Slipknot were among the most successful, with their aggressive sound and visually striking performances. Other notable bands include Deftones, System of a Down, and Papa Roach.

2000-2002: Nu metal continued to dominate the charts, with Linkin Park, P.O.D., and Disturbed among the most successful bands. However, the genre began to face criticism for being too formulaic, with many bands employing similar elements in their music and visual style.

2003-2004: Nu metal's popularity began to wane, with many bands moving away from the genre or breaking up. Linkin Park's album "Meteora" was a commercial success, but signaled a shift towards a more mainstream rock sound. Other bands, such as Korn and Papa Roach, experimented with different styles and incorporated more electronic elements into their music.

You can see how it evolves from edgy and aggressive in the 1990's into sounding more mellow, angsty and almost even sad in the 2000's

Sevendust is one of the most underrated bands in my opinion

Fun fact: LB won the award for Rollin in 2001. On 9/10/2001, the port authority sent a congrats letter to the band thanking them for using the buildings in the video…

Am I the only person who loved the nu-metal drums? The rounded kick and that snare just hanging out in the back?

I think people forget that Hoobastank was arguably a nu-metal band too, with the Reason just being such a mega hit ballad it overshadowed their bops like Crawling in the Dark

I'd like to add, Pantera and groove metal in general was pretty influential for Nu Metal, the downtuning, the attitude, the slower pace and riffs, the very rhytmic-like and groove in general.

Most hated, yet the most successful Metal genre of all time.

I graduated high school in 99 so this music perfectly captures that transition from being with all my friends, to everyone going their separate ways for college. The early songs we would listen to together vs. the later ones I listened to without them. Sad feelings, to be honest.

All the bands and records are great, but Korn is the best. That specific super low sound and bass plays as a part of drums. This is really great.

The thing I like about Linkin park is that they were mature and built their lyricism from hard struggles, and it tied into the awesome instrumental, and plus, mike shinoda was a great rapper, and it was amazing how they went from mike to Chester while the instrumental turns on the style of their lyrics.

I'm not a huge fan of Korn, but they are really iconic and owned this entire genre

I totally wasn’t expecting to be hit with Fungus-era Incubus as the second pick!
They absolutely wore their influences on their sleeves early on (RHCP, Mr. Bungle, Primus), but I always thought they had their own sound. The whole band were individually great musicians, but particularly the playfully weird lyrics and the very memorable and hummable guitar solos always stood out to me.
SCIENCE would blow my teenage mind, and thoroughly ruined all other music for a solid 12 months after I first heard it.
