The Izhorians (Ingrians)

First learned of the Inkerilaiset from a friend then working in Helsinki, not long after arriving in Finland in 1990 as an exchange student. If less than half the 266 living individuals still have a command of Ingrian, then it’s a language in danger of becoming extinct as speakers are 100-130. The Kalevala says: Peasants and clumps of willows are hard to destroy. Hopefully the community will get the help it needs to survive soon.
