Fujifilm autofocus is a joke ( ft. XH2s firmware 6.0 / XH2 4.0 / XT5 3.01 )

This whole video its my opinion that was created using the XH2S camera.

I’m not sure but from the messages I got this behaviour could be also present in the X-T5 3.01 , XS20 2.01 X100VI 1.10 GFX 100 II 2.10 firmware.

Heads up, they released X-T50 with a film simulation dial and a GFX100S II with same 117 af points and the af is as bad as in this video lol

I fixed all my Fuji AF problems by selling it all and buying a Nikon Z8. Problem solved and near perfect AF achieved.

I shoot portraits with the X-T5, and basically half of my shots are focused somewhere totally different than the green box was locked on. Even if it focuses on the eye, it would not focus on the iris, but the eye lashes, so if I come close to the model with an F/1.4 then don't expect the AF to do what you want it to do. Zoom lenses are the worse (16-55 in particular) and I get it that the camera decides where to focus, but it sends back signal to the lens that processes the information, and also it's different with every lens how much and what kind of (focal plane) light hits the sensor, so some lenses are still gonna be better at AF than others. I have Fuji's top portrait lens, the XF90, and it's still just meh. I prefer to just focus myself with one small focus point, but that's hard to do when your model is actually moving :P so well... you guys wanted vintage film photography feel? You got it! :D
Anyway, I still love the colours and the film-like texture of the photos, so I'm trying to learn shooting like if I was in the 90's, but maybe one day I might give up.

ya all want details? I use the x-h2s with the 23mm 1.4 LM lens, and even at f /4 I have the same performance after the 6.0 update so put down your pitchforks.. Tracking was extremely dissapointing endeavour for me as well, and while I was happy with the AF before the update (mostly), I find it worse right now.
For the sake of argument, even if only our cameras got worse after the update (which is not the case, I see people in X-H2s groups every day with the same complaint), it's still a fujifilm software issue, so stop defending them, maybe?
I get it, I love my X-H2s as well, but a shitty behaviour is a shitty behaviour!

Wow! A brutal, but honest and thorough, take down! And the best part is that you did all the troubleshooting that Fuji should be doing, in order to find the root of the problem for them. If I were running that company I would hire you and make you the lead quality engineer on the AF development team. If you continue to make videos like this, your channel will grow quickly. Thanks, man....I just subscribed.

All the comments are proving yet again that there is no such thing as set it and forget it in Fuji land. The user who has problems is the problem. No, Fujifilm AF is still behind.

I was quite happy with the autofocus system on my X-S20. Since the 2.01 firmware update, many of my photos are out of focus. THAT WASN'T THE CASE BEFORE.
Like you, green autofocus boxe on the eye, but when I review the photo on my computer, it's not pin sharp on the eye (when it's not blurry).
Worse still, it now finds 'eyes' in the ears, in the middle of the hair on the head, or in the background even if there's no-one there. This could happen occasionally before, but it was rare.
One more time it wasn't the case with firmware 1.20.

I was expecting top-of-the-line autofocus with this so-called "major update". I'm very disappointed and even upset.

HOW CAN I GO BACK TO THE OLD FIRMWARE? WHERE CAN I DOWNLOAD VERSION 1.20?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I switched from Canon DSLR 60D to Fujifilm X-T1 & X-T3 at the time but very dissapointed experiences on autofocus! I sshot my friends while motobike trips (touring)… the focus almost 90% failed… I have already heavily invest on prime fujifilm native lens… finally in this year 2024 I switch to Sony APSC camera A6600

I was mad at you for claiming that before watching the video, but then i tried what you did at 07:00 with my xh2s with a 16mm and yeah, you're right.

They messed up big time on this update. Hope the latest firmware with reala ace can fix this. Do you know if there's a way to downgrade the firmware?

I think you should email this video to Fujifilm, they've got to do something.

TLDW: OP reveals at 14:18 that fujifilm uses 104 very spaced out focus points in continuous subject/box/area tracking autofocus tracking instead of 425 (available on single autofocus and small single set point continuous focus) which causes major subject tracking issues as the camera jumps drastically from one of the 104 points to the next despite displaying "tracking" confirmation.

Thank you for having the courage to post the reality of the Fuji cameras. I have the GFX100 II and XT5 and they both do exactly what you’ve shown. It’s incredibly frustrating. I bought a Sony A7R5 out of frustration and it’s miles ahead of Fujifilm for AF.

All i experience is that no matter what your focus area is small or zone, the face tracking/recognition always jumps outside the focus area box. Its sucks

If you look closely on my whole talking head (very easy scenario) you will see that 40-50% of the time my face is out of focus, I was using using face-eye detection 0 sens 2 speed Multi.

Hey Man, I appreciate you doing this video. I hear everyone comments but you show your test, not sure how that is user error with a detail explanation if they do not have this issue. I have a LUMIX S5 IIX and looking at this Camera for my next purchase. I will have to rent this and try it for myself. Thanks again.
