Edward Witten Just Made Insane Announcement About String Theory

Edward Witten, the award winning physicist and major proponent of string theory, has just made a shocking announcement in a recent live interview. String theory is currently the only scientific theory that brilliantly ties all the facets of our universe together. We need it, and we need to understand it better to understand who we are and how we came to be.

You quickly skipped over the biggest problem that super string theory has.
Super string theory mathematically requires 10 dimensions to work.

We were hoping that the LHC would collide two particles travelling in the opposite direction at nearly the speed of light and produce an impact that had less detectable energy than the combined energy of the particles before the impact.

The idea is that if there was less energy after the collision the missing energy had been forced into one of the dimensions that we cannot see.

The experiment proved the Higgs-boson particle but there was no loss of energy detected.

Theoretical physicists believe this is because the size of the LHC is too small to detect the size of energy lost, these extra dimensions are theoretically super super small.

So we are currently building a much bigger LHC hoping that this one will be able to detect the loss of energy from impacts into extra dimensions.
Most scientists are skeptical that this will work though because the larger LHC is still way to small to detect the loss of energy into extra dimensions.

Its estimated that a LHC that orbits the moon may be just big enough to detect the loss of energy. If that doesn't work then in theory a LHC the size of the solar system could have a much greater change of detecting the loss of energy from the impact of particles colliding.

And by the way Edward Witten is primarily a theoretical physicist, who has to use extremely complex math in his string theory calculations. He happens to be so good at math that he was awarded a fields medal in math about 20 years ago.

I always understood a Theory in science to be essentially a fact. String "theory" is nothing more than a bunch of assumptions that can't be tested or falsified from my understanding. Nothing has really come of it since the 80s.

Very poorly presented summary of String Theory. No mention of String Theory 'predicting' wrong space-time i.e. Anti de-sitter, standard model has not been recovered. This has been known for a long time.

No matter how it turns out, I have been, and will always be a big fan of Ed Whitten. I know how long he’s put effort into waiting patiently for the hadron collider to verify super symmetry. I’m afraid even if they build a particle collider in the circles, the moon, it may not be validated. I hope he turns his attention to the other area mentioned in this piece. And at the end of the day, I know he’ll hold his head high climb into his flying saucer and go home. ;-). Peace.

How are the vibrating strings of String Theory fundamentally different from the vibrating, excited regions described by QFT?

Untested? Seriously? It is just an idea then. If t is a form of science fiction

Gravitation is produced by the familiar XYZ dimensions. If the other forces are also produced by those dimensions, then how to explain their hugely stronger strength? If we introduce other dimensions, then their strength could be due to the more energetic gravitational field 'squeezing' them, forcing their energy to remain localized. This is due to the relation Energy = Force * Distance. Gravitation is more energetic since everything is affected by it. Also, what gives the Higgs boson its mass? If its field comes from another dimension, then, this could be the answer. I feel string theory is correct.

Super symetry may have existed befor reionization but after we came into the partcles we know today. As to folded up dimensions this may have come with super symeyry breakeaking.

Any scientist willing to throw out an hypothesis that has the potential of String Theory is NOT a good scientist. Yes, the strings would be so small that we can't see them, measure them, study them, and really aren't close to being able to. That doesn't make it incorrect! Yes, study other possibilities, but it should NOT be discarded as wrong, and I don't believe that Witten believes it's wrong. A statement that he may be wrong means he's a good scientist. Nothing more. And BTW Voyager, learn the difference between a theory ("it's just a theory") and an hypothesis!
