As if we just look at the tractor, we have 2 unknowns to find (T and R). However, when looking at the whole system, the "T's" cancel each other out so we can find the only unknown value, R.

You could alternatively look at the Tractor and the Trailer separately; and use simultaneous equations to find both T and R..
