I flew the L-1011 for ATA and we focused training on this accident a great deal over the years, and I still use it today teaching Windshear. August 2nd 1985 DAL 191 from FLL to DFW approached from the North to land on what was then 17L (runways have since changed) The f/0 was flying and noticed the weather over the metroplex and commented "We are going to get the airplane washed" meaning it was raining in the area. There were mentions of Windshear on the radio and in the briefing as well as the LLWAS system was working. "Oh, there's lightning coming out of that one" was indication that they observed the weather conditions and continued on to the approach. There was one of the early LLWAS in operation and it recorded a gust of 46 kts less than 2 minutes before the crash . As they entered an extremely heavy column of rain, visibility with the ground was lost. The f/o saw the aircraft rising higher on the glideslope and began to retard the power to maintain the proper path to which the captain responded "You are going to lose it on the other side." Once in the vertical shaft of the down draft they started to go below the glideslope and the f/0 applied power and the captain said "Push it up... push it WAY up." The power was set to MAX EPR and they were literally mashed down into a plowed field where the aircraft touched down 6, 000' from the approach end of the runway at 200 kts and a deck angle of 23°. The ground spoilers deployed and the aircraft drove towards the airport crossing State Highway 114 and killed a man named Mayberry when his Toyota was struck by the #1 engine (left) The aircraft proceeded to contact a large water tower which broke apart the fuselage and started a massive post-crash fire which was responsible for considerable loss of life. 26 people survived and 137 did not. None of the cockpit crew survived. After this accident Windshear was taught much more extensively and in greater detail than ever before. Because of this we will never know how many lives have been saved by better trained crews but the phenomenon has continued to be studied and evaluated to the point that safety has become predominant in dealing with it.

Sad fact: that one person on the ground that died was a driver that got crushed by the plane's engine

I think this was due to a microburst but I'm kind of wondering about that poor person on the ground can you imagine this airline coming and going "Oh crap I'm dead"
