I remember exoplanets being a theory with no observations to back it up when I was a kid. Now we know of so many, and can predict their composition and weather, and new discoveries are found every year. Videos like this make me grateful to be alive in this era.

That we lowly bags of mostly water have the ability to even detect the planet from our distance and know of a ginormous thunderstorm caused by it's magnetism just blows my mind!

Thanks, Anton. I feel even smaller in the grand scale of things, but somehow smarter for it!

Merry Christmas season Anton, whatever and however you celebrate, hope you enjoy some holidays and as always we enjoy your videos.

But also stay wonderful as always

I am Hungarian and I didn't know anything about this project. Thank you Anton!

It would be interesting to see what emission patterns this system could detect if it were pointed at planets in our own solar system, like Venus, Earth, Jupiter and maybe even the Ice Giants to create a catalog of patterns in magnetic fields to look for when searching for potentially habitable planets. After all, the shape and type of magnetic field a planet has plays a huge role in its climate, so being able to spot the difference between an internally generated dynamo magnetic field like Earth's and an induced magnetic field like Venus's would be very useful.

planetary defense shield, obviously.

that’s a civilization we definitely do not want to mess with.

Thanks Anton, this is an exciting study. I read the links you included, to understand better how they could image the magnetosphere. It turns out they used exoplanet transits to detect emissions from atoms surrounding the planet which are located in its magnetosphere. They actually detected two emissions: those from singly ionized carbon, and those from neutral hydrogen. The absorption lines could then be used to map the extent of these atoms surrounding the planet as it passed in front of the star. This showed that they extended from 2-3AU out from the planet. From the combination of hydrogen and carbon detection they could determine that the atmosphere of the planet had low metallicity. So two things are cool about this study: They prove the planet has a magnetosphere, and they show it has low metallicity meaning it has an atmosphere like Jupiter (not Neptune) even though its mass is only 8% of Jupiter's mass. This is surprising and shows that our understanding of how gas giant planets form and create magnetosphere is still quite incomplete.

Everyone seems to be excited about the James Webb telescope seeing far. I want to see close ups of Proxima B, the closest exoplanet in a Goldilocks Zone., only 4.2 Light Years away. We could immediately see city lights!

hi anton, i just wanted to say i love your videos and how you break the information down very nicely and explain words we may not know the meaning of very expertly. great job once again!

Hi Anton,
First of all, thank you so much for my daily dose of astronomy.
I was wondering if you ever would ever make a science-podcast episode with someone?
I would love it if you ever get to join Lex Fridman on a episode for example.

I'm concerned about the 939 thousands subscribers. You should have a million, at least. I'm not sure how monetization works, but you deserve to be paid well. Very well. Just as Sabine Hossenfelder gives us mere mortals the "Science Without the Gobbledygook, " your presentations are always translated into Everyday English... an accomplishment that many "Scientists" have failed to realize, has been possible for at least a thousand years. Soooo.., Thanks! (again)

Wonderful. Again! I wish some other sciences would share their results as thoroughly and generously as astronomers do.
