Trolling Motor vs. Pedal Power
Which one has more torque?

We are at the 2019 St. Louis Boat and Sportshow
where we put these two kayaks head to head in a tug of war.

Kayak Specs:
Hobie Pro Angler 12
Length: 12’
Width: 36”
Kayak Hull Weight: 105 lbs.
Fully Rigged Kayak Weight: 128.5 lbs.
Kayak Weight (as tested): 350 lbs.
Propulsion: Mirage Drive w/ Turbo Fins

Nucanoe Frontier 12
Length: 12’
Width: 41”
Kayak Hull Weight: 73 lbs.
Fully Rigged Kayak Weight: 160 lbs.
Kayak Weight (as tested): 420 lbs.
Propulsion: Minn Kota Terrova I-Pilot 55 lb. thrust

Results:
This was a much anticipated Tug of War.
Everyone wasn’t sure how it would turn out.
We were very impressed with the amount of torque the
Mirage Drive had over the Trolling Motor.
Stay tuned to our channel to see if we can dethrone
The Hobie Mirage Drive when it takes on a
24 Volt / 80 lb thrust Minn Kota Trolling Motor.

Not how fast you can pedal, it's how long you can keep it up.

What proves this test, the justification of a 3k kayak! Lol.. Like there is a lot of situations that you need that much thrust in a kayak. Of course those hobie fins has more pull than a few inches blade!

I have one 24lb thrust Watersnake and everyone starts pedaling strong but it doesn’t take long for them to give up. I can go 4.0 mph for 8 hours. They top out at 2.5-3.0 mph continuous and they need to rest periodically.

Had I not seen this with my own eyes, ...I wouldn't believe it!

Edit: I think some made have missed the point of this little demo, ....it simply shows that Pedal power has more Thrust than that Trolling motor, ....and not how long the Pedal power is needed or can last, etc! In addition, the Pedal power can literally last all day (no...not at that thrust level), ...but it (the person) could be ready to provide that kind of burst speed if needed, ...just as demonstrated! As for the electric trolling more - No, ...No, it cannot last all day, but this we know all ready!

Parting shot: Perhaps the trolling motor will last 4, ..5, 7, 10 hours. I don't know. But, I think it's safe to say, it won't last all day at full thrust!

The mass of water being accelerated by the fins is more than what is being moved by the prop. I like the fins because I can fish and get a workout at the same time.

Most people probably arent gonna pedal like that guy besides how long you gonna be able to keep that up

Trolling motors work nice in good weather. The moment you get trapped into strong currents or swirls you better have the pedals drive handy.

Are there any kayak only tournaments that allow trolling motors?

That Hobie is damn 4 times as much and near half the weight head to head. You can definitely do a better $ for $ and lb for lb performance comparison here . Try again

I would like to confirm that’s an 80ib thrust motor that would mean it’s a 24vlt system.
