You shouldn't buy a car now, used or new. Period!

It was actually less expensive for me to put a new transmission in my car than buy a used or new car.

You've definitely got a point. Love your description of the Jeep - I actually laughed out loud! I had a Jeep Cherokee one time - not reliable and built for an odd shaped human. Keep up the great work and engaging delivery.

Great video. I live in South Florida where you have salt in the air every day and it's worse if you live
near the beach. In the past I've even seen brand new cars rusting out at dealerships. Brakes rusting out and even rust on the body of the car. So if you're looking for a new or used car if you live in Florida make sure you look it over and even if possible have the car on a lift to check for rust underneath the car.

Right now I could sell all my cars for more than I paid for them, but I think we are reaching the end of this craziness. Manufacturers will get back up to speed supplying new cars, and increasing interest rates will reduce demand for new and used, especially at the high end. Mark, I totally agree with you regarding front license plate mounts. Even if the car came from BC and not the salty provinces east of us, there is still the issue of repairing the damage left by the license plate mount which is often screwed right to the bumper fascia. We are fortunate here in Alberta where we don’t need a front license plate uglying up the car.

One of your best videos Mark! Last year here in Ontario (Rusty Province) we wanted to get a mid sized pick up truck. Used Colorados, Canyons, Frontiers (2015-2018) were all mid to high 30' most with over 100, 000 Kms. We decided to wait 8 months and bought a base Maverick XL Hybrid. Out the door for $32K. As you said new cars now make more sense then the used cars scams out there, but you have to wait. Your strategy on the Toyota for your daughter makes 100% sense. Find alternate means to get around and be a little patient. Used car prices have skyrocketed because new car dealers no longer stock many new cars on the lot so somebody who wants a car in the next 5 minutes buys a used car disaster, thus making a pile of bad decisions. Indeed we followed your strategy for the very same reasons. Now we have a 2022 brand new pick up that's getting great reviews, a Hybrid and a warranty. We really like the truck too....We ordered it in September 2021 and got it Mid May 2022.

Good that the new Toyota worked out well!
I wouldn't have thought that the used market was that bad. Simple research that would seem to be common sense, by looking at the new cost versus something used. Yet, to your point, they still sell the rust buckets with no discernible discount or advantage.
Great video, as always Mark!

Wow, Mark! I hadn’t been aware of the ability to shave off some vehicle history before. This video widely opened my eyes. Thank you very much!

Great advice Mark. A friend of mine mentioned yesterday while searching for a Camry. Dealer wanted new 47k for an xse, used one on the lot 2020 44k. Unless you are really desperate, thats gouging big time.

Keep up with content. Great advice but I would stay away from new cars as well right now. The mark up is still insane.

I absolutely agree with delaying the buy. Take care of what you've got, if you can, and don't feed the sharks.

Great video. Scotty Kilmer has told the same story about one of his sons deciding to buy new rather than used because he was paying the same price and I have a relative who's buying new for the same reason. I can almost understand dealerships selling used at inflated prices because they're bastards and that's what they do, but when private sellers start over pricing, you know there's a social contagion involved.

This is a great video and great advice. People look at the make and model and jump all over these cars. If this doesn’t scare u on buying use….. nothing will!!!

You nailed it. My wife and I was looking at Dodge Chargers as she was interested in 2015 to 2018 models that were all wheel drive and v6. The dealers here were selling these used ones with 50k to 80k miles on them for very close to the same price as a flipping new one! And the answers we get back, well it's the market, chip shortages and now high gas prices making them highly sought after. Thankfully we ended up finding a 2013 Honda Accord EX-L V6 coupe that was under 100k miles and a hair over 15k with a 4 year / 60k mile dealer warranty included. Clean carfax with only 2 prior owners and averaging less than 12k miles a year. So we grabbed it. My wife was looking at some 2018 model accord sedans that had the 4 cylinder and those ranged from 22k to 28k. Insane.

Great video!
This is EXACTLY what I realized when I went car "shopping" recently. By shopping, I mean more like browsing. I was ready to buy but I wasn't desperate.
What the hell is going on with the auto market? Prices are absurd.
I was left astounded seeing the prices that dealerships were asking for cars.
Used Mercedes EQS for MSRP or higher.
New Mercedes S580...$20k or more over MSRP.
New Mercedes-Maybach...the one spec'd to my liking...dealer was asking $60k over MSRP.
Lucid Air...used...$60k over MSRP.
But basically, EVERYTHING ELSE was similarly overpriced.
The problem is that ordering is not always an option. I was told that an EQS 53 AMG order could take 1 to 1 1/2 years. Maybe they were being dramatic to make me overpay for a used one they already have...but that is not going to happen.
Cars (especially high-end ones) are depreciating assets. It is foolish to pay more than absolutely necessary.
I will wait a year, even two, if need be for the market to correct itself...and it will. ANYONE buying in this market is going to lose big time...well, lose more than they should.
A little patience is all you need.

The only used car worth buying right now is a very cheap priced one that seems to be in okay condition and if you plan to drive it very little around town but yea $30k+ for a used vehicle is crazy rip off especially if you can buy that same vehicle brand new for that price.
