As a powerlifter, In my opinion using weights around 30-40% the actors 1RM would be about as realistic as you could get without causing much fatigue.

there’s another huge reason that i can see: safety. the weights can be unsteady so you risk the actor accidentally falling and sending the weights flying towards the crew if either they aren’t secured properly or the actor loses his/her grip.

plus they would probably drive the sound guys crazy due to clanging and banging!
