Home Alone Prop Trick. Thanks to US Navy Guy for the question that I had fun answering!

I’m Scott Reeder. I'm a film/tv prop master and have garnered a following of 1.3 million on TikTok and 100K+ on Instagram. I’ve worked on the hit movies Pitch Perfect and Machete and many others. Also, the TV shows Friday Night Lights, Parenthood, The Leftovers and many more. I have also become known for telling a dad joke or two.

Interesting. I always thought it looked like Kevin clenched his fists when the items dropped (his left fist is pretty clear to see), so I assumed it was a pull function instead of release.

Practical effects are my absolute favorite part of any movie, and seeing this guy talk about them in a time where CGI is used for absolutely everything honestly really makes me happy

Such a small scene but yet it is such a gem in this incredible movie!!!

Your channel never ceases to make me smile. So many props are such simple but clever ideas and designs and I love it. The only downside to loving these videos is wondering if I absolutely missed my calling, haha.

Kudos to who ever asked that question.

I'm both impressed with the prop knowledge and this guy's amazing ability with puns. A propsmith and a wordsmith.

Is the grocery drop considered a special effect? Surprised to learn an actor would be responsible for triggering an effects gag. I guess it makes sense, but my perception of filmmaking is that it's a highly compartmentalized effort with strict divisions between responsibilities. How common is it for actors to be responsible for triggering a special effect?

I think we all know the star of this scene. Kevin’s shoulders. You can see him die a little inside without words just with the expression of his shoulders.

oh, it's much easier this way.

I've thought that they had some strings attached to bags and when someone pulls that strings the bag will be ripped

Watching the clip with Kevin multiple times, it does appear the bags are pretty well sealed or seamingly sealed at the bottom. I believe it may have been done a bit differently than suggested...

okay i think your hypothesis is very close but looking back at the clip, the bottom of the back is clearly holding weight (like it takes shape meaning smth is pressed against it). I suggest that in addition to your statements, there is some kind of adhesive strong enough to handle some of the weight in the bag but as soon as more weight is added (ie. your line demonstration) the adhesive gives in and it breaks the bag

Clever (as always). Guess this is why they call you the Prop Master 🥰

I'm pretty sure there was a light stitching to the tear on the bottom of the bag, wich was tied to a fishing line behind the actor, so once he reached a certain distance both lines snapped off the stitching at the same time

The news brought to you as it drops.
Clean up in aisle 5.
Your fishing line idea got me hooked.

I'm so happy you spent this time on figuring this out. I was at a loss when I watched this and thankfully....you've figured it out for me. Thank you for this.
