Tech Marines. The Most IMPORTANT Space Marines? | Warhammer 40k Lore

If it wasn't for the tech marines, the entirety of a space marine chapter's armory would fall into disrepair. The attrition of warfare grinding their crusade to a screeching halt. And ya I get that your run of the mill marine knows how to repair his own gun and power armor, but they aren't making repairs on a Land raider or their ship's warp drive any time soon. Yet despite their importance, Tech marines are often looked at with fear and mistrust.

Shout out to that one Lamenters Techmarine that tried to viciously repair and build space ships on his own from scrap in order to get human slaves off an orc planet before the entire place is blown up

Space Marines: You swore loyalty to Mars and we shouldn't trust you because the emperor was betrayed once.
Tech Marine: He was, by space marines.

Not all chapters send SMs to Mars because of that distrust. The Dark Angels (and pretty much all of their successors) being the most famous example. They train their Tech Marines internally.

I’d argue the apothecaries are the most important marines, while they are medics, their primary function is attending to the gene-seed, and without gene-seed you got no marine.

I'm just imagining a single tech marine being frantic as everyone keeps breaking stuff
Tech marine: "ah!! I just fixed that tank yesterday! Oi! You lot better not be fucking up those guns!"

Apparently these mlg dudes are outcasts to the vast majority of marines due to their 50/50 alliance with both the imperium and the mechanicus.

Tech Marine trainee: "Do I really have to pray to the machine God every time I fix something? That's very heretic, I don't know if my colleagues will approve."

Tech Priest: "That's entirely optional... As long as you don't mind every single bolter stopping working at once."

Tech Marine: "Sing the song of the Machine God. None may stay our march..."

How do you think the Salamanders feel about Tech-Marines?
Given they have a policy of learning and maintain their war-gear at the individual marine level.

Really sucks that Tech Marines aren't in more media, cause this is the first time I'm hearing about them and they sound cool as heck!

Techmarines are like "you don't just kill a heretic, nor do you burn them. You rip them to pieces."

One thing of note in regards to the distrust among space Marines and tech Marines is that in the iron hands and their successor chapters is that tech priest are often revered instead as they tend to follow the cult mechanicus. Since these chapters often have close ties with the mechanicus their tax priests will often spend longer and even more advanced training than tech Marines of other chapters.

They’re also innovators! And notably eccentric, their work with hardware is usually begrudgingly accepted by the mechanicus despite the cult of Mars belief that all knowledge is already foretold that’s why no one can invent or learn how something works without taking it apart hence the obsession with finding STCs.

They and Apothecaries undeniably the most important members of any given Chapter.

Yo, WestHammer
If techmarines were the only ones capable of maintaining all the war gear a chapter needs up to and including multi-mile long ships, there would for obvious reasons be hundreds of them, OR all chapters would be in a constant state of disrepair as the twenty guys most chapters admit to having scrabble to fix the next thing before it kills everyone.
Just getting a lightbulb replaced requires an activation chant, and a decommissioning chant for the defunct bulb. Just on of your ships has tens of thousands of lightbulbs.
Added to this insanity, Some chapters make their own Bolt rounds, a handcrafting task taking about an hour a shell.
(And both these tasks apparently cannot be left in the manipulators of servitors, not to mention the stuff like maintaining Void shields/geller field or adjusting life-support that is too complicated to ever be trusted to lesser techs.)

I get it man, the wiki only says so much, and you want to keep it simple for noobies; but this is a logistical problem you just cannot hand wave.
