It was late when I started writing this song in Miami. My apartment smelled like the beach and drying towels and I hadn’t been to either yet. I’d written several songs before it, many of which felt like Miami, but they weren’t resonating with me emotionally – so I turned off the synths, took out the snares, removed the bass lines, and I just played a single naked chord on the piano. That felt right. That single naked chord would become ‘Hole Hearted’. This project isn’t about taking a musical photograph of wherever I am physically, it’s about taking a photograph of my own heart and seeing where I am, wherever I am; whether or not the cities make an impact is for you to decide.

There’s this specific moment I’ve experienced in my romantic life – on both sides – I’ve experienced it as the person pulling away, and as the person being pulled away from. It’s when either you or the other person have begun to unplug from whatever you thought you were building together, or exploring, or discovering, and even before it’s over – or before the shift is at all acknowledged by either of you – you can feel it. It’s like what was once this warm cup of tea – is slowly turning cold, and then it turns to sand, and then it slips through your fingers. You go for another sip because some part of you wants to pretend it isn’t changing. Surely, this thing wasn’t temporary. Surely, I can rebind the sand, refill the cup, and somehow resurrect something that is no longer there. And then when even the sand is completely gone – you stare into your empty hands and remember what moments and thoughts and feelings once filled the cup you used to hold.

I thought this feeling deserved a song.
