I've owned a Z6 now for two years, got it "Nikon refurbished" with 24-70 f4 from Adorama. So I do high school action sports and senior photos etc. using a D5 ( now a Z9 ) and the "lowly" Z6. I gotta say the Z6 has made much more money for me than the action cameras in the last six months. It is perfectly capable of capturing sharp images for my senior portraits sessions and shots for composite banners, I've got no issues and really don't care if Nikon has any firmware upgrades for it. From my limited experience I've learned that when a camera won't function as I want it to or has an issue, I am 100% the reason. Hope you feel better soon, Ted from Sebastian, Fl

I hear you Matt and if Nikon is reading any of these, most likely not, I think they've completely dropped the ball on the 6ii and the 7ii. Not that long ago, and currently for people still waiting for their Z9 to arrive, the 7ii was THE flagship mirrorless camera for Nikon. I have it and i remember the reviews talking about the amazing processor and how many firmware upgrades it could manage and so on and so forth. Well, where the heck are our upgrades? We still don't have anywhere best in class or middle of the class autofocus compared to equivalents to Sony and other features. It's not like the Z7ii was perfect, far from it so we are owed some love. I got in early with the belief that they would aggressively support ALL of their new mirrorless line up. Clearly not.

Hi Matt, Yes people keep say Z6ii does not focus in low light or birds in flight, I've used mine after sunset taking foxes and owls deer etc, these are with 500mm lenses and sometimes a converter, birds in flight if you use or try the focus modes and settings it works OK, keeper rate Iam well pleased with, it's no Z9 Sony or Cannon but not as bad as people make out in my use case anyway. Video focus works well at high speed toddler parties.
Having said that I use pentax cameras also so any thing is better than that for wildlife, though not used as much since going to the Z6ii, Saying that I would not turn down a software focus update Nikon

So the Z7ii which is only 18 months old and "it is still not possible to assign auto ISO to a custom button, no way assign a button to alter minimum shutter speed in auto ISO. No way to allow crop mode chosen in camera doesn't allow you to have the full sensor readout in post.
You can't have spirit level & histogram together. No way to assign the histogram to a custom button either. The function ring & function buttons are very limited in what can assign them too".
I would agree Matt, as a Z7ii user have seen 3 updates in 18 months. The Z9 is on 3 updates in 6 months. For many of us who don't need or afford the Z9 we are just more than a bit off. I don't want to hear about theZ9. Too big & heavy for landscape photographers.
This is not your fault Matt. Shame you get the flack.

Hi Matt, Thanks for another great video! Wonderful that you can see all sides of the Firmware Updates. I'm sure Nikon is making sure their 'Flagship' is taken care of first, then hopefully they can improve the Zii's autofocus! I have the Z9 and Z7ii. The Z9 (I have used it a Lot)has been awesome since I got it in January, the Z7ii is a big disappointment for action when I came from the D850. I hope they keep pumping out more new fabulous lenses! Hoping you get better soon!

So... At this point, is it safe to say that Nikon has forgotten about the Z6ii and Z7ii? Two updates for the flagship Z9 that's hard to get because backorders, and that not everyone affords/need and nothing is said about the 6 and 7??

Gotta love a firmware update that says things like "You can now expect better results from vibration reduction..." and "Autofocus is now better at..." and " "Autofocus now produces more accurate results with...". Then there were the AF 'fixes'. Beauty. Yah the new age of firmware updates. My recent D6 update was terribly anaemic in comparison :) I have had some moments of total unresponsiveness on AF using the Z9; like total dead focus response as if the camera had gone to manual focus -- in wide area or 3D AF and subject detection. Off then on again made it go away and allow me to breathe again :) I put it down to my learning to live with computers with lenses on them and letting go of analog :) Hope you're feeling better soon. Cheers!

I had no idea this was coming, but then again, I don't have my Z9 (yet - maybe September). Still - it was a welcome video - TY Matt.

Feel better, drink a hot beverage, and get some rest. Will let you know what I think about the update after taking it out for a spin with a long lens. Have been working on panning shots this week and so this will be tested. I'm sure you'll test the flicker adjustments. I'm interested in evaluating the stickiness and accuracy of the AF because this has been an issue for small wildlife. Thanks Nikon for continuing to make things better. Oh, and by the way, a friend of mine who switched to the Sony A1 was thinking of switching back because of Nikon's new lenses....and with firmware updates continuing...Nikon has gotten some attention. Keep it up.

It would be nice to see how well this FW v.2.1 perform if you’d provide some simple test results…🤷🏻‍♂️

Thanks for continuing to be a great resource for info. I shoot with the Z6 and use it for landscapes video and family stuff, kids running around like headless chickens and I’ve got to say it works wonders. Most shots are in focus, usually only the first and last shots are misses. You know kids they can’t do anything in a straight line, shit they can’t even do something at one consecutive speed. So I don’t get the crap the Z6 auto focus gets, I also have a channel and use it for vlogging… I trust it to capture my face with almost 100% certainty I obviously can’t look at the screen as I vlogging but I don’t have to. Practice, play with setting and it’ll surprise you how good it actually is. Plus it’s 4k is beautiful and it’s 1080 slow motion in camera is so epic. Anyway some people are just shitters and they will shit on anything!!! Keep it up

I think with the Z9 with no mechanical shutter it may be more of a game changer than I realised. It is so future proofed that there may never be a Z9ii it will just be updates. I still haven’t got one but hopefully by the end of the year I will have one or save until I can get it and the 400mm together. Exciting times in the camera world

It's pretty amazing how quickly we've been getting updates for these new camera bodies. We did actually get a firmware update for the Z6 II and Z7 II just two months and a few weeks ago on April 20 this year and it had AF improvements and quite a few other things including support for the ML-L7. Not all the bodies are on the same firmware release schedule. The Z9 is really quite a young camera, so I'd expect a lot more drastic changes especially since it's so new. I do hope we get more for the Z6 II and Z7 II but we have indeed been getting firmware updates. I did see that the D5 and D6 also got firmware updates recently.

I also use Olympus, and we've been having a similar situation with firmware. I think the latest body, the OM-1 has been getting a lot more updates recently, but then again it's also a really young body. Other bodies like the E-M1X could really use some updates and I know people have been waiting. I think our firmware updates on the Olympus side have been less frequent than Nikon's. At least that's the sense I've been getting, but we too are also getting our updates.

These updates really require heavy testing before they are released. We rely on our camera bodies to be extremely reliable, so they do have to stamp out any bugs and anything that would cause the body to quit or interfere with our work. It's next level testing compared to some other electronics. I say the best camera is the one that just works and you never notice it and it lets you work and make photos without getting in the way. Any unreliability can cause us to miss important moments and moments, time, and light are money. I'd rather have something stable than something that has more features but was hastily put out and is unstable or breaks things I need when I'm working on my art

I can’t wait to put the update on my Z9. I’ve given up on expecting updates to my Z6 II. I bought it in January 2021 and traded in my Z6 to get it. I really thought I was making the right decision as I thought it would be more future proof. I still think Nikon can fix a lot of focusing issues with the Z6 II and Z7 II if they want. Unless they are plannning a 3rd generation by the beginning of 2023.

I would like to see more about how to use the « high-frequency fliquering » feature!
