Inventors often wish to protect their intellectual property through obtaining patents. In general, patents have a positive effect on society because they promote innovation and help develop new products.
A patent is the right to exclude others from using, making and selling the product or method of use for 20 years after it is filed. Innovations must be new and inventive, and kept secret, with a patent filed within a year from the date an idea is communicated to others.
In three minutes, UW professor of technology law Toshiko Takenaka explains the reasons and requirements for obtaining a patent, the fine lines of ownership when the inventor is employed by a company, and the ways patents benefit people.
