Award-winning plein air painter, John Burton's contention is, there is almost no pure black or white, which makes what we interpret as black or white in a painting a kind of optical illusion. In Part 5 of this mini series, he explains how you can use this knowledge to go to where color lives and paint more vividly and realistically.

Thank you for this tip. I didn't really understand why black kills paintings before or why leaving white in a painting made it look off. The little demonstrating was truly eye opening and has given me a clearer understand of values. :D

Fantastic lessons! Also, great video editing on these videos. The transitions from each of his paintings at the start of these videos were very lovely. I truly felt immersed in his work.
