Switzerland to host peace summit to gather international support for Ukraine amidst war with Russia
Показать описание
Switzerland is set to host a peace summit on June 15-16 to support Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's peace proposals. Key attendees include US Vice President Kamala Harris, French President Emmanuel Macron, and leaders from Germany, Italy, Britain, Canada, and Japan. Turkey and Hungary, both maintaining ties with Russia, will be represented by their foreign ministers. Notably, China, a significant consumer of Russian oil and a supplier to Russia, will not attend. Moscow, which wasn't invited, has dismissed the summit as futile and has set stringent conditions for peace talks, including the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from certain regions and Ukraine abandoning NATO aspirations.
The summit aims to gather international support for Ukraine amidst its ongoing war with Russia. Despite months of lobbying, China declined participation, citing Russia's exclusion from the event. Russia's stance remains firm, stating peace talks can only proceed if Ukraine withdraws its troops from contested regions and renounces its NATO ambitions. The situation remains dire, with Ukraine needing substantial reconstruction funds and ongoing military support. India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who met with Zelensky at the G7 Summit, emphasized dialogue and diplomacy as the path forward.
