The Mega Tsunami that struck Jervis Bay in the recent past has been well documented by two geoscientists as early as 2001. This is the story of the massive wave that inundated this part of New South Wales. We will explore what evidence exists and what notable features we can see in the present day. This mega tsunami reached heights exceeding 130 meters or 426.5 feet. And it left behind the telltale signs of large flood events associated with tsunamis. From chevrons, to bedrock alteration, to the scraping off of topsoil leaving behind barren land dominated by nothing but bedrock and tsunamigenic deposits.

Indigenous Australians have multiple flood "myths", with some that speak of waves taller than the tallest trees. These flood "myths" have now been corroborated by extensive geological research into the area. This overlap shows how important it is to preserve the stories of the earliest inhabitants of this land.

I have lived in Jervis Bay for 30 years now, and this is some of the best footage and knowledge out there. Well done!

The tsunami hit Sydney area and went right over the top of North Head-signs still there. It was caused by a sudden mudslide of built up deposited sediment going over the edge of the continental shelf drop about 50 miles offshore, about 2 miles deep over the cliff.

Fascinating. The visual evidence really is quite compelling. We really need to pay more attention to what the indigenous peoples of this land tell us about the past.

I like that you quote your sources up front. So many podcasts fail to do so.

There is a large sandstone rock sitting on top of the Cliffs south of Sydney. We used this rock known as "Hanging Rock" as a positioning point when scuba diving as a point to anchor.
This rock did not erode and fall from anything like the rocks at the bottom of the cliff faces, it is sitting atop the rock ledge and was lifted to that point.

Your videos are already an informative delight, but as an Aboriginal scientist your consistent acknowledgement of First Nations oral records in your videos is the cherry on top

Brilliant footage of Jervis Bay. I have conducted sea kayaking tours here since 1995 and Scuba dived here since the mid 1980's and live in Huskisson. This information is absolutely fascinating and I will look at our geological features very differently now, thanks for the great video. Ross

I wonder if this is the same tsunami that washed ashore the Chinese tresure ships in the south Island of NZ, parts of these ships were discovered 120m above sea level, apparently caused by a meteor impact between Campbell Island and Stewart Island . . . . . apparently a tsunami hit north Stradbroke island about the same time, washing a Spanish galleon ashore and when Dunwich was settled in 1827 the local aboriginals told the tale and had Spanish coins to prove it, thanks for sharing your knowledge

At Sculpture By The Sea at Bondi several years ago there was a sculpture on top of the headland consisting of two super tall poles with a line strung between the tops.
It said that represented the level of the wave that swept over the headland.
I suspect if it happened again it would affect Bondi property prices because the houses that are at Bondi would then be at Katoomba :-)

About 50 years ago I came across an article in the Australian post about erratics found in the southern highland in NSW, they were huge and still covered in limpets and starfish and it always intrigued me as to how boulders that were obviously oceanic came to be deposited 200 miles inland

1437 chinese navy records state their fleet was hit near Stewart Island of Sth New Zealand, by meteor. They lost 90% of the fleet due to 400 foot high speed waves!

How have I only just found this channel? This is great. I lived in a Himalayan region for a while and found the difference fascinating between the geology of my familiar, much loved continent, the oldest on the planet, and the wee baby ground of the Himalayas. You can really notice it when travelling where roads have been cut into the sides of mountains. The first time I noticed it was a WOW! moment.

My sister and i live on the south coast, she has, what i thought was an irrational fear of this happening. Turns out maybe not so irrational? 🤷😅

Gday mate please forgive if I miss spel some words or my grammer is bad had a accident when I was young I'm an Aussie and was wondering if you could make a video on the blue mountains in NSW and how they were formed I was watching on of your shows and you said that nsw and parts of qld were a big lava field so to make the blue mountains it would have been big lava waves then drops off at emu plains could you explain it a bit on your channel so I understand what I'm trying to say it's interesting is all

I was working in Mareeba west of Kuranda taking with a geologist working on sampling soil cores looking for sand and shell layers overlaid by other normal soil layers. These were indicative of tsunamis that overtopped the east coastal range. They would have been big enough to cross the range in this area and flowed west of the divide. Not sure of the age of these tsunami but old very old.

Back in the mid 1980's, I recall reading that in the Narooma, southern NSW area, marine rocks had been found and assessed as having been deposited "... high up on hill tops.." inland from the coast! It was hypothesised that a tsunami was the culprit for the misplaced boulders. Love to hear what research has been done in that area too
