2020 GMC Sierra 1500 - Capable on road and off

The 2020 GMC Sierra 1500’s AT4 trim delivers the best of both worlds: everyday usability paired with off-road capability.

While pickup trucks historically offered a small handful of V6 or V8 engines, the new era of do-anything vehicles means shoppers can select anything from a turbocharged 4-cylinder to a naturally aspirated V8. The 2020 GMC Sierra also offers a Duramax diesel 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine. Power, regardless of engine, is routed to either rear- or 4-wheel drive via a 10-speed automatic transmission. Towing capacity tops out at 12,200 pounds.

Inside, you’ll find an easy-to-use touchscreen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The AT4 trim also features a head-up display (HUD), wireless charging, and plenty of USB ports and power outlets.

GM’s rear camera mirror also makes an appearance on the 2020 Sierra 1500. This displays a video feed from one of the truck’s many rear-facing cameras on the rear-view mirror. It’s helpful, and if you don’t like it, you can turn it off with the flick of a switch.

Pricing for the 2020 GMC Sierra starts at $29,600, but it’s not hard to make that number skyrocket. A top-tier, loaded GMC Sierra Denali can eclipse $70,000.

Taking delivery of mine tomorrow (aug 14, 2021). This and other reviews helped me enormously in making my decision. Thanks.

I like the Denali but most of the professional reviews say no need to pay the Denali price when you can get the SLT with most of the Denali features for cheaper.

Pro tailgate puts the others to shame, rear bumper steps, extra wide bed, AC outlet in the bed and cabin, 12, (yes 12) welded in place bed tie-downs plus 6 optional tie-down spots, storage behind the rear seats (tire pump, hand guns), storage under the rear seats, full size spare..plus the GMC cheaper than the others even in the Denali trim (heads up display, surround camera vibrating seat alerts (instead of a chime))...best value by far.

UPDATE:  I bought a loaded SLT with the STANDARD size bed.  With the gate down and the "step" flipped up 4' x 8' drywall and plywood will fit FLAT on the bed with 2 inches of clearance between the wheel wells and about 5 inches of clearance between the back of the bed and the flipped up step. With the AC outlet in the bed we can cut our pieces right at the truck if we need to.  Just an awesome truck so far.

This is a crazy time we live where a 1500 series truck, let me say that again a 1500 series truck can cost $70k. When my father bought a 2006 Ford F-350 Dually Lariat fully loaded he only paid $54k. I love this GMC truck and would even love to own a 2500HD diesel AT4, but not at $76K+.

The 3.0L D-Max is light years ahead of the Ford and RAM diesels.

I think the tailgate was the last thing that could really be innovated on. I think its really cool.

I just ordered a 2021 GMC Sierra Work truck, with the V6 6 speed trans. I loaded it up with tech, it has everything except OnStar, XM, and leather but has all the other tech goodies like automatic braking front and rear park assist and even has the X 31 Off-Road package it came to 38K and that doesn't include incentives when it arrives, which should be around Christmas 2020. I also got a Double Cab because I wanted my truck built in Ft. Wayne, IN, and not in Salio, MX where the Crew Cabs are built.

I always want to try GMC but i just don't like the gear shift on GMC, i will just stay with My tundra and ford range.
But i get to admit that GMC looks beautiful

Great review. It is a superb engine in this higher trim. I would like to see how the 5.3 performs with new ten speed automatic. Overall, it is very capable, and the word functional comes to mind. For that much money, GM must do better for the interior. Both Ford higher end trims (King Ranch) or new RAM interiors put the GM truck interior to shame. Otherwise, fine vehicle.

Love mine except for the seats. The seat backs are great, very supportive, but the cushions are extremely firm. If you spend a ton of time in your truck like me, I'd recommend taking it on an extended test drive before buying. It's not a deal breaker for me because I love a lot of the other features, but is definitely a miss, seats should be more comfortable at this price range.

Question for previous owners.
How is the reliability up to 100k miles? ; any mechanical problems, or extraneous work other than standard maintenance?
Thanks ahead

Everyone loves the "red tow hooks" yeah they look sharp but it's not something needed to always be pointed out on a 70k truck?? 😂
