Around the world food scarcity is becoming a bigger issue - but there are some regions where it's hitting harder than others. So in this video we'll explain what really caused the crisis, why it's not all Putin and what we can do about it.

TLDR is all about getting you up to date with the news of today, without bias and without filter. We aim to give you the information you need, quickly and simply so that you can make your own decision.

TLDR is a completely independent & privately owned media company that's not afraid to tackle the issues we think are most important. The channel is run by just a small group of young people, with us hoping to pass on our enthusiasm for politics to other young people. I think it's a bit unfair to use India's export ban as an example for food protectionism. India actually significantly raised wheat exports in reaction to the Ukraine war, and the ban was only a ban on free market sales, due to people buying up all of India's wheat for hording purposes. It was one thing if poor countries bought their wheat, but it was a different thing when rich countries that normally didn't buy Indian wheat started buying entire silos worth of it when they were obviously rich enough to absorb the increased prices and were only looking for a quick buck.

Maybe if food processing plants wouldn't keep "spontaneously" catching on fire it wouldn't be so bad.

I disagree with the fact that Africa's sympathy will change from Russia.

This is the problem of taking a Westernised academic view on Africa. Russia's relationship with Africa is much deeper that you think, when under USSR they funded liberation movements around the continent and exploited the sour relationship between Africa and colonial/former colonial powers. Unfortunately, most liberation fighters funded by the USSR became authoritarian as soon as they got into power, in short establishing one centre of power. So to think that such deep entrenched relationships will swing overnight is a big joke.

I bet Russia is probably stealing some of Ukraine's grain and exporting it to Africa gaining more political mileage on the continent. If France had let go of its former colonies in Africa maybe the relations would have improved by now.

Correction: The recent vote UN vote was to remove Russia from the UN Human Rights Council, not the UN Security Council, which is not possible (pretty sure about this, please correct me if I am missing some esoteric detail as to how this might be possible). Great video, appreciate your work.

Turning food to ethanol to fuel cars seems like a particularly bad idea at present.

Would appreciate frequent updates on this topic in particular.

Why on Earth should Europe and Ukraine concede? To avoid famine in Africa? And face the same situation in a couple of years when Russia decides it's time to invade again?
It should be clear already that Russia sees any compromise as a weakness and weakness justifies further attacks.

Every time someone suggests giving Putin Donbas and Crimea in exchange for peace, I hear "Let's just give him Czechoslovakia - I'm sure that will be enough to satisfy him."

at least two countries not being able to share resources due to "circumstances" is really big in our time of globalization.

It’s pretty clear that if there’s starvation it will be all Russias fault however the west will be blamed and made to deal with it. Lovely

It’s cynical to tell Ukraine to give up, so that other countries could get the food from Ukraine. Tell Russia to give up

I've been saying for a while that Africa needs to become self sufficient in food. Which means aggressive industrialised farming and possibly a transition to indoor farming. It'll be a massive culture shock but better than starvation and wars over resources.

From October we will be eating this year's harvest pretty much. We will know better then. But it looks pretty grim. Existing stockpiles are much less than estimated - so much of China's inventory is either wrongly recorded or rotten or both.

8:34 the suggestion here that the West could convince 54 African nations that Putin is the cause of their hunger isn’t well thought out. African people are aware of their need to eat. Furthermore, African nations - like all nations - act in their best interest. If the West wants to turn to African nations, Western nations would have to negotiate better deal for their agricultural imports than is currently being offered by Russia. Simply put, words may fill mouths, but they do not fill stomachs. Acting as better business partners is the only step that can be taken in convincing African nations to unalign themselves with Putin.

Hopefully, Africa will become more stable and self-sufficient to make drought, pandemic and wars less damaging for its food security
