Bob. my grandfather used to soak his in mineral oil for 2 weeks then take his fingers and squeeze the excess out and hang them in the barn in the shade to dry. I still have a dozen or so that are over 40 years old and in perfect condition. The colors are brilliant and they are soft and pliable. Thom

We live in the Texas panhandle over here at Flomot Texas. My dad, who passed 18 years ago, tanned snake hides. At one time, he had enough of them to make a 3 piece suit. I've got the vest he had made. I'm just now getting into this myself. Figured what the hell, after I killed 4 in one day outside the house. Killed another one that was trying to dry gulch me by sneeking up behind me the other day. I turned around and there he was about 5 feet from me slithering up. So far I now have 9 in the freezer. I appreciate your presentation. It was very educational, thx..

Maybe use some of that snake skin to make an eyepatch for the right eye? I bet it’ll look really cool.

My boyfriend gave me one of the skins he had aquired when he was clearing his yard of several large rattlesnakes. Only he had soaked them in motor oil. They were rather icky and a little smelly so i soaked them in a strong solution of tea that was cooked until the water was black. And a lot of salt. ( yeah, neither one of us was very certain of the proper way of tanning. But but did take the smell away). I cant remember what else i did but one i wa done and dried it it came out satisfactory enough to sew it to a piece of felt to hang on a wall. It was a pretty patterned skin. The diamond markings were heart shaped in the center of the skin. I will always remember him with love when i look at it. He died of lung cancer a year after he gave it to me. He was the love of my life.

Lmao, just had to share how while watching my wife happened to walk in as you said, "you should have 4 skins in here, 4 sticks..." She made the nastiest look and said, "what the hell are you watching!?" Lol she heard that soooo wrong!

This is so cool. As a foreigner I believe Texas is the most magical part of America.

I’m new to this channel and i’m living thousands of miles away, continents away even. You’re the first channel i’ve ever been deeply inspired by, where an appreciation goes beyond enjoying entertaining content.

Hat bands, belts, wallets, and hand bags are the more usual uses for snake skins that I grew up doing ....

Wonderful tutorial. I remember the episode when you were bit by the rattler - very harrowing. You also mentioned a while back about making flour out of Yucca seeds. Would love to see how that is done as I cannot find Yucca flour anywhere.

I totally agree with the 50/50 alcohol glycerin mix, keeps the skin soft and supple for years. I used the exact same methods for a prairie rattler I made into a hatband going on 7 years ago. Skinned, scraped the fat off, salted it and kept it in the shade the rest of the week til I got home and could freeze it. A week later washed the salt off and soaked it in the tanning mix for a week and it turned out amazing!
