Leon Teremin is a Russian inventor, best known for the invention of "Theremin vox", one of the first electric musical instruments (1920.), which is also the only instrument that can be played without any touch, by influencing with the hands the electromagnetic field created by the instrument.

I have always associated this instrument with "creepy" or scary music; but oh my, that Clair de Lune was so exquisite it brought tears to my eyes. Unbelievable!

The first gal, absolutely gorgeous. The way she uses the timbre of her voice against that of the Theramin, and her pitch accuracy is amazing. VERY musical.

The second...well, let's just change it up, shall we. Obviously various sounds can be chosen to be controlled by the Theramin. Again, a superb performance. I got a kick out of the fact that he looked as if he were dancing, almost, while playing...some visual entertainment as well.

My other favorite was the Bach Aria. Again, magnificent control and gorgeous interpretation. True expression. The pitch changes utilized occasionally were so beautifully accomplished, both during and 'scooping' or sliding from above into the notes. It is amazing how much expression she got by VERY subtly changing the pitch throughout a sustained note, just sharpening the tiniest amount and then back to ground. The kind of thing people that can REALLY sing do that autotune absolutely DESTROYS. To me the feeling is really that of brightening the note. Too much, though, and it is jarring. She did it just right. If you used autotune on her performance (assuming even that it was smart enough, say AI fully up to the task, to be able to leave the continuous pitch transitions between pitches alone, ones that would be there with no intentional pitch articulation) it would ruin that performance.

There were a couple of performances in here that were somewhat less impressive, though, if I'm being honest. I liked least the Lacrimosa, and that is a piece I very much enjoyed singing, back when I did. There were some fairly noticeable misses in there. Maybe just not his best day.

The last trio looked like it may have been played in a music conservatory. Beautiful, as well. I never really thought of the Theramin as much more than an oddity or a toy. I have VERY MUCH changed my mind. It is most assuredly a true musical instrument, in the right hands. In the wrong ones it makes my hair hurt (not these here, obviously, all were at a very high level of proficiency).

Thx for posting, I truly enjoyed it. I would be really cool to hear a master do some jazz on one, solo, or in a group. Bumblebee was just plain cute, playful, and inventive...and IMPRESSIVE. The sound that was chosen was absolutely spot on, especially in the lower registers, it was very obviously flying bees.
