It saddens me that many of those who still wish to divide this great country fail to realize the sacrifices that were made by hundreds of thousands. That the freedom of millions were paid for in blood and suffering and the sacrifices of several generations.
Thank you Kelly for reminding us that those who sacrificed were human and their actions hold a lasting legacy for us all.

Wow, this one was personally interesting to me; my great-great-grandfather, and one of his brothers (both from Alabama), died as POW's at Andersonville, while the rest of their brothers marched with Sherman across the South. After the war, one of the surviving brothers returned to Winston, Alabama, to become the sheriff there during Reconstruction. He also raised my great-grandfather after the young boy's mother also sadly passed at a young age. As a fellow Texan, I understand how Miss Clarkson might have felt to find out that her ancestors fought for the Union, not the Confederacy. For me, it was excellent news. I'm proud of my Southern Unionist heritage.

Tears. My four times great grandfather, Edward Freeland, fought in the Civil War, from an Ohio division. And he, too, was captured (although he was captured during the Wilderness Campaign) and imprisoned at Andersonville. He was released, but unfortunately he died just months after returning home from the effects of Andersonville. It truly is an American tragedy what happened there. I wish more Americans knew about it and understood what our ancestors fought and died for all of those years ago. They deserve respect, and the best way we can honor them is to uphold our democracy and continue to fight for equality in the United States. God bless Kelly and her big heart for grasping the seriousness of it all. 💜💜💜

A little-known fact that approximately 1800 POW’s that had been released from Andersonville died onboard the SS Sultana when she exploded and sank April 27, 1865 on the Mississippi river. This is considered the worst US maritime disaster in history to this day.

Morgan's Raiders attacked Corydon Indiana during the civil war because there was rumors that escaped slavers were hiding there. They didn't find any slaves so they pillaged and burned homes. Corydon was a SAFE place in the underground railroad. Escapees were hiding in the caverns. My dad was born and raised in Corydon.
