Extreme poverty in China: Girl Scavenges for Food, Boy Sells Bottles, Elderly Drink Dirty Water

As per the data from China's National Bureau of Statistics, last year's poverty threshold in China stood at an annual net income of 3,218 yuan, translating to a daily income of about 1.34 USD. This year, the threshold for escaping poverty has been set at an annual income of 4,000 yuan, or approximately or 1.67 USD a day. This is still lower than the World Bank's definition of extreme poverty which is set at an income of 1.90 USD per day.

I've lived in China for 5 years and in various cities. This was so common that I was told to 'close off my heart' by locals. There is nothing that could be done. Part of me wanted to create a shelter for people especially children. But as a foreigner, it looks more suspicious than helpful for a community.

Wumao always like to share pictures of American homeless people. And it is true, we do have a lot of people living on the streets. But I have *never* seen any video or pictures of children in America going through trash for something to eat. Our homeless are mostly people with mental health or drug problems. America has its problems and we are far, *far* from perfect, but we would never let our children live on the streets like this. Someone, the government, a church, a non-profit, somebody would do something.

I cried when I saw that little girl collecting bottles. Is she an orphan? She does not go to school. Five years old? How does she know to collect bottles? She looks so sweet. God please help these beautiful, poor ppl out of poverty. The elder man bowing to show gratitude for bottle of water is tragic and heartbreaking. Xi is a monster just like Kim Jung Un. May God shut down and abolish the CCP.

The scene with the little girl is heart breaking. I want to go there right now and pick her up and save her. No one, especially a child, should be forced to live like this. Nor the older gentleman or anyone for that matter. We have enough resources to feed and clothe everyone on this planet. And yes, there are freeloaders who will abuse that, but that little girl and that older gentleman should not be punished for it. From the looks of it, someone clearly is looking after her (her hair is tied up neatly and her face is clean) so I can only hope that she still has her parents. The cruel irony is that she's living in a supposed communist paradise where such things should not exist. Then we must remember that China under the brutal CCP is the land of shortcuts and facades.

I likely will never have kids of my own which is something which I dearly regret so maybe I'm a bit biased. To see that a young girl and an older gentleman in such a circumstance is simply infuriating. Yes, there are quite few folks who will abuse the system, but a lot of them also come in the form of CEOs who milk the system in the form of corporate welfare paid for by us the taxpayer. The ever increasing divide between the extremely rich and the working poor will be the downfall of us if we allow it to continue to grow.
