Mullet MTB Setup

Check out my mullet mtb setup, it’s just a simple trail bike that can hang at the downhill bike park. Can the average rider really feel the difference with a larger wheel in the front. I was guessing probably not. Mullet mtb pros and cons. What is the mullet mtb advantage? I give a quick mullet mtb review from the average riders point of view.

I like to ride a lot of DH parks, but buying a dedicated enduro bike for just that purpose was not in the financial cards. My trail bike was perfectly capable for me, but I’m not sending it off any 15’ drop where I need a ton of travel. However I do like the DH black diamond tech trails. So I thought it would be cool if I could make my bike more versatile and if the Mullet might actually be able to do just that. I found a few mullet mtb pros and cons.

I recently experimented with my Niner Jet 9 RDO that was setup 27.5+. I put in a 29er front and have been riding recently. I did notice the chopper like feel the minute I got on the MX wheel. The ride seems a bit stiffer with the big wheel up front. This may be due to the difference between a 27.5+ 3" tire at 15 psi vs 29 at 20 psi. The rear is 27.5+ 2.6" tire. Overall, I haven't noticed a big difference yet but will try the same experiment you did by switching out the tires on a trail test. I ride VT with similar trail characteristics as you explained. I did measure the HTA and found it go from 66 to 64. I haven't noticed a difference climbing or trail riding other than the plush feel of the 27.5+. Thanks for your vid. BTW-Same age as you. Go old spokes!

After thinking hard about this for a while, long after I made this video, I did some dirty-math on the affect of the headtube angle by changing the front wheel from a 27.5 to a 29. The change is actually much more than I considered; with the standard 27.5 front wheel my bike has a headtube angle of 69 degrees, but with the mullet it slackens it to about 65 degrees. So my thinking is it's probably the headtube angle that I was noticing the most when I was doing my test enduro runs and not necessarily the increased wheel diameter smoothing out the ride. This actually now makes more sense to me.
