Canadian doctors' calls for more physician assistants keep falling on deaf ears

The COVID-19 pandemic has put an additional strain on all facets of Canada's health care system, but the emerging profession of physician assistants could help ease the burden.

Doctors, hospital managers and universities all agree the country needs more of them. But 10 years after the first physician assistants graduated from Canadian universities, there are fewer than 800 in the entire country.

As Ross Lords reports, the calls to grow the positions have gone unanswered.

I know so many doctors working odd jobs because the Canadian Health care system won't take in graduates who are internationally trained. They are probably better skilled. If you have some emergency or a surgery that is needed, be prepared to wait hours/weeks/months to get treatment. Such is the Canadian healthcare system. The doctors are overpaid, the staff underpaid. They just wouldn't allow more professionals because that would eat up the doctors' salaries. Pathetic.

Tens of thousands of physicians and medical specialists have immigrated to Canada in recent years, but they couldn`t be qualified.
Not because they are not well trained just for a complex qualifying administration in the college of physicians around the country. Short-term bridging programs could easily prepare them to help the health care system.

This is nothing new. I had Pancreatitis for months ( pre covid) went to emergency 3 times over 37 days . Was treated like a drug seeker. I had to do my own research and go back to tell them. I had pancreatitis. Sure enough a ultrasound showed I was right. Then sent home to pass gall stones which took a few days. Without pain meds. We wonder why so many turn to the streets for pain meds. If I could have I would have but was to sick to move . It’s been a terrible system for years. It’s free for a reason.

Are you forking serious? We had been accepted into school, they canceled the course and signed us up for some "On the job" training as well, then called us and Said "you're on a list, you might get a call but there's a high demand!"

Uhh, if they're crying for people I expect my phone to ring any second now rather than the 6 months we've been waiting.

Well we got what we deserved. After years of allowing the federal government to Syphon funding from our Healthcare System. Healthcare should be first. We should have been screaming this at the government
If you want more nurses and doctors then pay for their schooling. Not give it away to some third-world country so they can have birth control. Our money should be spent on things that benefit us. I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who would gladly do this work but are not financially able to get the education.

Universities are funded but Foreign students which make up 70-80% of STEM courses. This was proven when Saudi Arabia took back 50 Medical schools from eastern Canada University. The corruption of Universities and the funding model puts Canadian Students aside. The School limits are 30% as foreign students, but Foreigners go to take, Science, Technology, Engineering, Math classes. Driving up Canadian acceptance criteria to the 90% level. This is also true in Colleges, where High Tech classes are predominately Foreign students. Stats Canada show, 75% of foreign students leave the country, either to their home land or go to the USA for higher wages. The Corruption of the University funding model, has more classes in Poli Sci, Psychology courses than all engineering classes in Canada combined.

Please continue to pay attention to India. The number of people diagnosed in mid-May should be more than 300, 000, but today 6/21 is actually less than 60, 000. Please help confirm why it can drop so much in a month, and the vaccine delivery rate in India is less than Canada.
