I have a few silver questions for you. 1) Why has the price of silver risen like it has? 2) Since silver is a softer metal will it wear down over time as it is repeatedly polished? 3) What is the best method to use to polish silver without damaging it? 4) I've heard of anti-tarnish jewelry boxes for silver...what does this mean? How would a jewelry box keep silver from tarnishing? Is it just because it keeps it from being exposed to air?

In the jewelry industry, to be considered Vermeil, it must have a minimum of 2.5 micron thickness of 10-24K Gold on Sterling Silver. Back in the day, Gold Vermeil was mostly 22-24K Gold on Sterling Silver but due to the rising cost of Gold, the thickness of high karat gold has dropped. What was once called vermeil is now put in parenthesis to suggest authenticity - "vermeil" or vermeil-like - meaning the process is the same but it doesn't qualify. So, if someone tells you the item is Gold Vermeil, be sure to ask how thick the layer is.

To me, precious metals are rather like “luxury handbags”. The difference being that precious metals are more likely to hold their value. if you’re going for “a look” vermeil is perfectly fine - after all silver is a precious metal. I love it all - especially if it sparkles!

thank you dear
I consider Vermeil fine jewelry for a couple of reasons
it's scriptural it's in the Bible "silver and gold kind words are like apples of gold in bowls of silver "
Jesus also says that he knows we need these things we just shouldn't put them before him or worry about how much we get
Secondly 14 carats only 50% gold and you're paying over spot for that
In third it's what I can afford lol
Love y'all
God Bless

Here is another video suggestion: I have been to your website and I see that some of your prices range from hundreds to thousands. I understand that sterling silver is in the 100s... and the more expensive metals are in the thousands, BUT some of the gems range which determines the price point and so forth. I’m just wondering how you determine price point and what makes something more valuable than others?

Also— how come sterling silver is available for under 100 dollars in some places and not in others?

And karats— how are the sizes determined? Just size alone?

And do you actually “make the jewelry” or do you outsource?

I’m not trying to steel your ideas, lol. I am genuinely curious about the road map you have taken to do this. Thank you! 🙏🏼

Hi Jill, what a timely video. I was just watching a clip from Nordstrom where they have Monica Vinader, the jewelry designer talking about her pieces which are made in vermeil. What is your opinion on vermeil?

This is not correct. Gold filled jewelry is not "plated". Gold filled has 100 times the gold content that plating does." Double clad ( there is also single clad gold filled) material splits the gold content into surface layers on both sides of the material. The gold alloy is bonded to both surfaces of the core with heat and pressure. Gold-filled material made in Italy incorporates Cobalt into the brass layer of the metal. The addition of Cobalt improves material hardness and durability. Since it is a magnetic element, gold-filled made in Italy will respond to a magnet test. It is also regulated by the FTC. What people are selling is plated. Gold filled jewelry is not even made remotely the same, nor is it anywhere near the quality of actual gold filled jewelry. Ps. Its pronounced: *VER-MAY* My Uncle is a jeweler in Sicily, has made his own gold filled chain and has it had 30+ years. Actual gold filled jewelry can last a lifetime, just not these scammers selling plating as filled.

Thank you Jill! How do you care for vermeil pieces? I have a few pieces and in recent years, more and more places selling jewelry are using vermeil.

Learned another way of saying covered/washed/plated in gold. So funny how there are so many different ways of referring to that. Silver seems to have become so much more expensive than in previous years. Is it all because of its growing popularity? I’m not sure I’d like to cover a silver piece in gold. If I want a gold piece I want it to be gold. If I want a silver piece I want it to look silver. I’m I crazy?

Would it be okay to shower with it on? I use real soap that is made through saponification, so it’s not like most brands that are synthetic.
