Just a tip for anyone watching. I install commercial storefront doors for a living. The most important part of installing any door is making sure everything is perfectly level. Otherwise you will have issues with the door swinging out and hitting the ground, or there will be uneven gaps between the door and frame, or worst case it won't work at all.

What you want to do, is level up the ENTIRE frame with wood shims COMPLETELY prior to anchoring or nailing anything. Check for level in all 3 directions. (Across the header, down each vertical jamb where the door stops are, and down each vertical jamb on either the inside or outside.) Just because the door "lines up" with the wall framework and looks nice, doesn't mean it's level or will work AT ALL. Get the frame perfectly level no matter what, worry about looks after you're done.

Then you can either shove some plastic shims and anchor, or just anchor and break off the wood shims. The best and most proper is to use plastic shims as they don't rot and let the door drop or shift at all later down the road.

The way he did it in this video worked fine, but it very easily could've led to him getting the door out of square and making it a parallelogram due to the fact that he nailed one side, then shimmed the other and nailed it after the fact.

I just discovered this channel from one of your "shorts". I love this channel! You're talking about everything I have going on in my life. The content is all very relevant to my life. You're like the father I never had.😅

My Grandpa was a finished carpenter who tough me how to do door installs as a kid. He just passed a few months back. Watching you hang that door brought back so many great memories of him. It may have just been a quick and instructive video for most, but I really loved it! Thanks Cody!

You are an excellent educator. You explain things in an organized & clear manner. This is the best installation video I have seen. Thank you.

This has been the best tutorial that I have seen to date. Thanks for doing this one. Hanging a door has been a conundrum to me for years! Thanks!

Nicely done! One tip for others planning to do this (as someone who has installed doors for a living for 10+ years), it's a good idea not to wear a tool belt while working on it as it increases the chance of scratching the slab while carrying, and making adjustments after the door is hung.

Always level your sill first. I like to wrap the rough opening higher on the jack studs. Also always put about 3 beads of silicone down first before putting door in. Seals threshold to sill so water and draft can't find way into house. Seen that many times. I've got the Stabila Jammer Set levels for doing doors; 6'6" + 32" levels. That way when you're leveling up your hinge side you can make sure it's straight and you don't shim a bow into the hinges and cause hinge binding. Strike side I adjust to the door making sure the reveal stays consistent.

Happy to hear after 6 years you learned how to replace the door. Mrs W must be happy not to have to worry about bugs coming in any more.

Well, I thought that was a great video Cody, thank you. Keep up the good work and continue to pass on good info! As a side note, I'd like to say that I was looking at the comments. God Bless for keeping your chin up and remember that your true followers won't get sucked into all that negativity. I think I'll refrain from reading comments

"super easy, you can do this yourself" moments later... "do know that everything is going to go wrong, and this is going to be difficult" lol!

A big help to reduce weathering and greatly reduce heat loss in those brutally cold winters you have, would be to add a storm door to the outside of the regular door. I honestly can't believe you've been in that house for five or six years without one. No wonder the wooden door is so weathered.

Cody, here in New york (upstate not NYC) we get horrible winters and here's some tips I hope are helpful to you! I've always called the tape grace tape and I also take a heavy bead of good exterior silicone under the threshold and set the door in it! I also take the weatherstripping and pull it back and screw under that to hide it. Also before I trim it i take some of that grace tape and put it on the sides and top face on the outside to help seal the opening to keep and air from blowing into the house. Not to tell you how to do it!

I appreciate your approach. Makes me feel like I can do it. I have done a lot of renovating with my ex-husband but now I am on my own so I always have to gear myself up. I watched some OCD videos and this was a perfect finish for those. Wish me luck!

So I watched a lot of your videos and this one came up as suggested. I have been looking for a replacement threshold cap when I spotted your prehung door came with exactly the same part I needed. It totally changed how/what I was searching the internet for. Thank you!
