Another great Shifty story during the Battle of the Bulge, is when he noticed a tree, that hadn't been there the day before - mind you, they were looking at a forest full of'em. So Shifty went to Lipton and told him about this tree. Lipton asked for a few artillery rounds to be put in and around that area, which scattered not a few Germans; the tree actually was a camouflaged AA-gun. As Lipton put it: "It all happened, because Shifty saw a tree almost a mile away that hadn't been there the day before".

I think it's in the "We Who Are Alive And Remain" book - most of you have probably read it, but I can't recommend it highly enough.

To be able to pick that sniper off from that distance, in a standing position, while worrying he might get you first so you gotta be quick, that’s amazing marksmanship.

Wow, I loved Shifty from the time I heard him say “He might have liked to fish, or he might have liked to hunt. We might have had a lot in common. But he was doin what he was supposed to do and I was doin the job I had to do.”
And then to see where Shifty took his famous shot and to see what he saw down range was extremely cool.
Rest In Peace Shifty. And thanks Dale Dye for taking the time out to get to know these guys and helping to accurately convey that on Big Screen.

Mr. Powers was from a town pretty close to my hometown called Clinchco, Virginia. I've spoken with multiple people who had interactions with him before his passing and everyone raved about his humility, kindness, and character. A true American hero.

For anyone interested.

When easy was in bastonge shifty was at Op or watch and noticed a tree in the distance that wasn’t there the day before. So he got Lipton to come look and lip didn’t believe that anything was amiss until shifty pointed out the tree was moving. Turns out it was Germans setting up Anti aircraft weapons. They called in arty and destroyed it.

Lipton couldn’t believe shifty could see what it was from that far away and the fact that in all that snow and all those trees he could notice a tree that wasn’t there before.

Dude is a legend!

When it comes down to going hungry or shooting squirrels, you get to be a pretty dang good shot. He couldn't have known that time in the woods of SW Virginia was preparing him for a much greater role, but it did. Shifty wasn't just a great shot, he had eagle eyes, and could spot the smallest movement in the trees. His abilities as a scout were just as valuable to the men of Easy. I hope there were a lot of guys like him in the war, I'm sure there were, and they are all heroes.

Really great video, Ross Owens. Thank you for holding so long on the POV shot. Exactly what we wanted to see.

I just finished watching the "Band of Brothers" series again for the fifth time.
The last "EASY COMPANY" veteran passed a few months ago...
So sad, they're all gone now .
Rest in peace guys, God Bless .

“Hell, Shifty I might have given you a run for your money.”
“No, no, I’m not a good shot.”

As Shifty related in the Ambrose book, his best-shooting, most-accurate Garand was one which had some pitting in the barrel (perhaps due to the use of corrosive primers, which were common at that time). Shifty got gigged for it at an inspection and had to give it up. The M-1 they gave him instead had a pristine barrel, but Shift said he couldn't hit anything with it. Whereas the one with the pitting, Shifty said, "It seemed like all I had to do was point that gun at something and I got a hit".... Fortunes of war, Shifty, fortunes of war. Wonder what happened to that original rifle?

I met Shifty in Normandy several years ago. Nice man.

If you were raised shooting rifles as Darell “Shifty” Powers was, hunting and know the fundamentals of of trajectory and where the bullet is going to hit each and every time, it is because you are familiar with your rifle where to shoot and you have it is done so many times it becomes secondary nature and he was predestined (Shifty) to be in this place where he was needed. Just like Chief Chris Kyle was in the same place to protect young Marines lives just like Shifty protecting the great soldiers of the 506 PIR. If you want your kid to play concerto’s at 15 you start him on the piano at 4-5/years old. They don ‘t learn it in a day!

WoW, for the first time in my entire life, a show underproduced a great feat. I can not believe how far that bell tower is.

I like that when the easy company vets start talking, everyone including the tour guide go quiet and listen to what they have to say.
