Thanks Lou for letting me know about this car! One of these got me into trouble. As a senior in high school, I had a nice conservative-looking 1971 Ford Ranchero Squire. Ofcourse the standard engine was a 351C-4V and had a C-6 automatic. I thought it was pretty hot and a real sleeper. I enjoyed blowing stock SS396 Camaro's off the road. Well, one evening, after dropping a date off, I was innocently driving home on the main drag. A person driving a Cougar Eliminator was looking for some action, and I gave it to him, kinda. With runs from stoplight to stoplight, he was always a little faster than me. At the last stoplight, I realized that my car definitely wasn't faster and wasen't even in the same class of performance. My hood didn't have a hood scoop and the Cougar did. I decided to give him a smoke-show. I put my car in neutral, watching for the cross street light to turn red. Soon as my light turned green I floored it and put it into 1st gear. My tires lit up and I filled the intersection with smoke. All you could see was dim headlights in the smoke. Well, I ended up laying two streaks of rubber 175 ft. long. How did I know? One of the motorcycle police officers went back and measured while the other officer wrote the ticket and put the length on it. The only time I ever came close to burning rubber like that again was at a decommissioned dragstrip and I was on my motorcycle. It wasn't until years later that I learned the Cougar Eliminator had a 428. That guy was just playing with me and I never had a chance!

Too cool....Cougars are under rated classics. This one is just in the stratosphere. Priceless

I owned one of these 1970 Cougar Eliminators in the late eighties. It was the same color. Although it had a custom 351 Cleveland motor (with "ram air" package) and auto transmission with 4.11 gears. It also had power windows which this car clearly does not have. Other than the latter, it was identical. Unfortunately mine had detrimental rust in the forward frame. It was fun while it lasted. Then I sold it, with the warning about the frame, but the purchaser wanted it so bad he didn`t care. Very nice car indeed. It used to hold its own on the street in its day.

Always had a spot in my heart for the early Cougars with the hidden headlights. Love the looks. To think of $5K back in 1970 that was a lot of money for a car. You could buy a lot of car for that $$$. THANK YOU LOU and GORD
