NYC vs. San Francisco: Cost of Housing Rapidly Rising

June 22 -- San Francisco, like New York City, benefits from strong housing demand and limited new supply. The impact of that demand on apartment landlords largely depends on the affordability difference between for-sale and for-rent housing. New York apartment rents and prices remain higher than San Francisco, yet the West Coast market is gaining ground as rents and sales prices are growing faster there. Bloomberg Intelligence's Jeffrey Langbaum has more on "Bloomberg Markets."

It is available in more than 310 million households worldwide and reaches the most affluent and influential viewers in terms of household income, asset value and education levels. When property is going up, the masses think it will never end. History has shown otherwise.

NYC, may be more expensive but the problem in the Bay area is that there is no middle market. You either have subsidized housing or high priced rentals. NYC, has far more middle market rentals. In SF an Silicon valley, you have ghetto apartments for 1600 or nicer apts in more stable areas for 2600-3200 per month, there is very few that are in the middle of the two. Lastly, the public transit here sucks. If you try to live further out, I mean far out, you will not save much because you will spend your "savings" in gas, time and frustration due to the intense traffic.

What a gift were giving our children as the cost goes up and the quality goes down. Mans creativity.

NYC doesn't compare to bay area. Its way bigger has 5 borough which are cities themselves and has largest public transportation so you can live farther away from your job to save on rent. Also NJ is a suburb of NYC which in some parts are very cheap.

just looking at the price is frustrating and then on Craigslist you have what's called a "commuter room"

Realtors are to blame. Speculating should be against the law and realtors should have to have degrees with ethics laws. They should not be able to sell homes to investors instead of homebuyers and should not be able to set rents or home values.

Might as well work and handout over your paycheck to the landlord. All this is by design. Simple law of supply and demand. Keep the supply low and the demand high and get top dollars.
