How to divide banana plant pups (Musa basjoo).

Dividing young Musa basjoo banana plant pups is a great way to get more banana plants for free. In this video I show you how I divide banana plant pups using a spade, knife and trowel. Splitting your pup plants is an easy job and once you have potted your new banana plant pups up and watered them in they will grow away well too develop more of their own roots.

As banana plants die after flowering, splitting up your pup plants will ensure you have more banana plants to replace your older Musa basjoo plant.

The mini pup will live just fine if you wash the wound with clean, cool water and put it in a jar with the same. Just enough water to cover the wound and full sun will show micro roots in a week. Add a dash of a standard hydroponic liquid fertilizer and that mini will be ready for dirt in 2 weeks. Cheers from Virginia!

Thanks for the info man ! I tried exactly your method and I transplanted a potted basjoo pup to the ground successfully with lots of roots on it! Cheers from Greece.

I've got banana plant envy, my two are only babies, 3' tall can't wait for them to grow. Got a pup growing already though.

I'm sure the small pup will survive. These bananas are like cockroaches, they almost never die~

Great vid! I was going to film one of these at the end of summer... I have around 12 pups 😱🌱

I did the same with a "pup" it wasn't doing great so i cut the leaves and later cut it in the middle this wil help to only focus on making roots and you have a bigger chance it will survive

For the younger shoots you may try chopping the top until the roots starts again, place them in a pot with bottom heat they will have time to recover and grow again. If you don't chop the leaves you should keep the plant in a very high humidity place but chances are there you may loose a lot of water from the leaves. You may want to sprinkle the leaves while it is hot.

can't we put it back in the garden ? do we have to put it in a separate pot first?

It's good to have some rooting hormone powder on hand if you get a pup with few roots

Awesome video thank you! About the pup that only had the one root did it survive? I was thinking could you cut the leaves off to help it root better? Thanks

Can the pup be treated with rooting powder OR grown in a glass filled with water until more roots grow? Getting ready to separated a 60cm pup for the first time, I don’t want to kill either plant. Mother plant is 1 year old and 1.5 meters tall (already!).

This is umbelivable ! Your advice is totally contrary to others saying you must trim the roots and leaves leaving only a single spear like in middle and do not plant immediately, leave it to dry a bit for couple days or more ?
Which one is correct, which one to follow ???

4:00 So cut most of the leaves off and just leave one. The same method used when taking cutting.
