Why are pirouettes so hard??? 😆

Have you ever wondered
“why are pirouettes so darn hard?”
If not, what’s your secret? But if you’re like the rest of us, you probably know what I’m talking about…
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
For most ballet students, pirouettes are one of those things that takes the longest to improve. At the beginning it feels like once you put something in place, something else falls off… right? For example, as soon as you start spotting, you forget the arms and vice versa… 🤯
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Have you ever wondered why that is?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🌪 There’s a series of different technical elements you have to control in order for a pirouette to work (core, arms, spotting, relevé, turnout).
🌪 It’s a movement that’s based on balance (and the creation of a solid axis) and if one of the above elements is off that axis, the pirouette doesn’t work.
🌪 Until you’ve mastered it, you can’t control its speed - too little force and you won’t turn, too much and you won’t stop.
🌪 The forces of nature are against you! 😆The spinning action pushes you away from your gravity centre (aka your axis) (centrifugal power), so you need to be extra strong to resist that.
🌪Our human bodies' no. 1 job is to keep us safe! Change doesn’t feel safe… If you think about the way a dancer’s body moves in a pirouette, it really doesn’t resemble any of your everyday activities, right? 🤣 So, your body detects danger and wants to stop you. That’s why pirouettes can feel scary sometimes.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What should you do then?
🩰 Accept the fact that they might take a bit longer but they will improve if you keep working on them.
🩰 Work on all the above technical elements individually before you bring them together.
🩰 Remind yourself that the fear is an illusion. In reality, you’re not in any real danger as long as you pay attention to your technique.
