Im a pretty experienced driver who drives for a living, and these type of merge lanes are always blind so you dont realise that you dont need to stop till its too late, at that point you should stop braking and start accelerating upto speed, either way i dont think it should be a major if someone decided treat it as a give way if the roads quiet

He did fine and it was natural response. Dont be over-judgemental. In roads, you cant be 100% perfect. Eveb the best of drivers do the msitakes.

If he did go he would've smashed into that van because clearly he didn't see the merging lane. He made the safe call and that's all that matters.

That merge lane is not wide enough. And he did use it. That parked highway agency vehicle was also occuping some of that space.

The trees also obscured the view. And he didnt stop. He also correctly accelerated hard to get up to speed.

Imagine all instructors made weird faces like that when you made a mistake

I see what happened, he didn’t even realize he had his own lane, he turned to look over his shoulder while his view was still obstructed by the bushes. I first realize it either at first Play

He drove defensively, what’s wrong with that? That is the no.1 rule.

Absolutely yes...
Rather than getting hit by someone while going to the main lane I'll do this every time.
In India there is saying that " Delay is better than accident"...

I get that he avoided the merge lane and stopped. But there was a car parked in the merge lane, and he wasn’t confident. It’s better to be cautious as long as no one was behind him imo

To be fair, the bushes make it seem like that merging lane isnt there.

EDIT: For any of you small brains out there. At around 5 seconds you CANNOT SEE THE MERGING LANE. The trees are in the way, the driver is also already looking backwards to check for traffic. The drawn lines on the road that would indicate it is a merging lane are not yet visible either. No, you cant see it. You're not a better driver, just pretentious.

If you genuinely think you would just go on there because you "know" there "has" to be a merging lane, I feel sorry for the next tree you didnt expect to be around the corner. Visual confirmation is the PRIMARY objective when driving a car. You dont go anywhere you cant see, because you might hit something. PRETENTIOUS. Get off the road, some of us are trying to live another couple years.

Has the bushes and that car wasn’t parked, I would have said that stopping wasn’t necessary, but due to the obstructions, slowing down for confirmation is the best sign of matured driver 😊

Even if he made a mistake he handled this really well and safe. Most people wouldn't accomplish this by using the merging lane

I'm really glad my driving instructor didn't sit and smirk, chuckle, and make faces whenever I made a mistake.

Honestly he shouldn’t be at fault for anything on that. He still performed well on road safety.

To be fair that merging lane is
1. Too narrow
2. Hard to see because of the bushes
And he acted well of instinct

Worst thing about driving is going on roads you haven't experienced before and don't know what to expect. Plenty of roads joining a dual carriageway have no or a very small merge lane, there's no point assuming there will be one because the consequences of getting it wrong are way worse than assuming there will be one.
An example is my dad is a very experienced driver and one of the best around, he still makes the odd mistake driving on a road he's never driven before because it can be impossible to know what's the correct action until you're right there

It's a slip-road, so no, stay in the left lane until you get a space to join the main motorway

By my neighborhood we have a junction similar to this (USA) and there’s a yield sign most people stop to merge and I believe we should too if there’s cars passing by and don’t change lanes for the merge

Merging lane, NO need to stop. Slow down if not 100% sure, maybe. Turn on right blinker, accelerate, check right mirror, check over right shoulder, merge into traffic if safe.

I don't judge him, to be fair it took me a sec to realise it was a merging lane. That instructor is a real professional for not telling him
